I'd like to suggest a new section be added for general discussion around websites, development or projects.

 

Currently there is a category specifically around "Community Empowerment", but judging from the descriptions on these sections it doesn't seem that threads related to non-community based websites would fit there.

 

Just as an example, we're still Administrators if we're only running a handful of static page websites, or if we're running a simple WordPress blog. Let's have a more generalised section for talk about websites, development, coding, hosting providers, and so on.

 

Just an idea, interested to hear anyone else's thoughts.

There is of course room for improvement. We wanted to keep everything as simple as possible when we first launched. That was a bit longer than a month ago. And I must say, sometimes I often have to rethink which category I'll put my thread in. So, a general web discussion is definitely not a bad idea.

We appreciate your ideas and thoughts, and encourage others to participate in this. I'll probably come with a solution to expand our layout and nodes in a couple of days.

Yeah, I like this idea because there is more to admining a site than the community side. Especially for example in the one case where I have a site that is a forum, a wiki and a Discord, and I spend about as much time in the Wiki as I do in the forum... (but I'm the only wiki author)

Right. I had some time to think about the implementation of a general web discussion. I'm open to any feedback, suggestions and insights you may have. Nothing is set in stone.

I like the sound of Option 2, maybe with the addition of one extra section of Tutorials & Guides for people to post guides on how to do certain things for people who don't have experience. (ie, how to register a domain/set nameservers, how to setup webmail accounts, etc etc)

The thing with tutorials and guides is that members typically don't contribute to them, so it falls on the staff to create and maintain this content. This is time-consuming and, in many cases, unnecessary. Why? Most webmasters are opting for platforms that don’t require much technical know-how (which is why options like Invision Community and XenForo Cloud are becoming so popular). Additionally, these kinds of tutorials are readily available elsewhere, and with tools like ChatGPT, getting answers to technical questions has never been easier. While it may have its limitations, ChatGPT is an effective tool for many technical inquiries.

 

I appreciate the suggestion, though. I’m not completely opposed to a guides and tutorials section, but ideally, I'd like to see more interest and contributions from members before moving forward with it.

Guides tend to happen organically if and when people write them - no need to expand until there’s supply, rather than demand.

Anyone else care to give some insights before I roll out this update on either option? :)
