Is your community too dependent on you?

I think my member base is dependent on me because I'm the primary go-to person on the forum who assists them with their message board and publishes new resources. I have a handful of contributors who help out as well, but I think when people know the owner is there to assist, they feel more comfortable being able to seek support with their forum and look up to the visionary of the forum.

Should volunteer moderators be compensated?

As I see it, they volunteer because they enjoy what they do. It would be nice if you compensated them for their hard work somehow, but I also don't think it's required. I would assist with their online projects if they need scripting help, or I could award them with credits to be used in the shop on my forum.

How to Promote Your Community to the Right Audience

I've primarily been dependent on signature advertising on forums of a similar niche. I have 8,000+ posts on the official Jcink support board with an advertisement banner attached to my signature for people to find my board. I run a forum for Jcink resources. I'm sure people see the advertisement banner in my signature from time to time and check it out, since we're there to provide administrators with Jcink-related resources and services, and where better to drop your advertisement than the official board created for the service.

Free Forum Software That Doesn't Need Installation

That should be .net.
It's nice that there are a wide variety of free forum services to choose from for poor folks like me.
I mainly chose Jcink because it seemed to need a resource board that has bountiful resources and is easy to adapt to, being an avid user of InvisionFree in the past. I've always used non-self-hosted software since I've been more of a front-end developer than a back-end developer, and I enjoy creating JavaScript code to produce new features or modify existing ones.

Let’s say you had to step away from your forum for a month - or even disappear completely. What would happen? Would things keep running smoothly, or would it quickly die out ? Some admins set up systems, documentation, and staff teams that can handle the day-to-day. Others run everything personally, even if it means the forum revolves entirely around them. Volunteer moderators are not paid anything for working as staff members in any forum/community. They are there to help the forum get by in supporting the ways they can. There are paid staff members whom are required to deliver a certain quota because they are earning as a staff for their contribution. The following software doesn't need to be hosted to enjoy, but that's not saying some similar services that employ MyBB etc. haven't existed. https://forumotion.com https://jcink.com https://proboards.com https://forumspark.com (new one) Do you all know any others? Myself, I've never gotten into these as an admin, but I have enjoyed some forums like this as a user.
