From time to time, Google releases a spam update to its search engine, which results in some websites being deemed spam by Google and subsequently losing their rankings.

Google says that this spam update will take a week to roll out, but it may take longer.

Spam updates. Google refers to its standard spam updates documentation as follows:

While Google's automated systems for detecting search spam operate continuously, we sometimes implement significant improvements to their functionality. We call these enhancements "spam updates" and announce them on our list of Google Search ranking updates.

For instance, SpamBrain is our AI-driven spam-prevention system. Periodically, we upgrade this system to enhance its ability to identify spam and catch new types of spam.

Websites that notice changes following a spam update should review our spam policies to ensure compliance. Sites violating these policies may experience lower rankings or be excluded from search results. Implementing changes can help a site improve if our automated systems recognize compliance over several months.

In the case of a link spam update, changes might not lead to immediate improvement. This is because our systems neutralize the impact of spammy links, removing any ranking benefits those links might have previously conferred on your site.

This is good to know, especially for webmasters and it is good that Google has made people aware before they initially roll it out.

Hopefully anyone who needs to is able to get things ready for when this rolls out.

It’s being rolled out already:

June 2024 spam update

Incident began at 2024-06-20 08:12 (all times are US/Pacific).

Google’s updates generally take longer than a week though. It always just a basic estimate time frame on their part.

If you’re seeing ranking changes now, I’d recommend waiting a week or two to make changes until the update is fully rolled out and completed.

Google has officially completed the rollout of their spam update after a 7 day period. According to SeRoundTable.

Did anyone see any changes to their search engine rankings after this rollout?
