One of the features I love so much in forums is when I get a mail whenever someone sends me a DM or even get notifications when someone comment on a thread I'm watching. It helps me come online immediately if it's something urgent.

Forums that are not set this way makes me miss out on DM which might require immediate attention.

What's your take on this forum feature?

It's definitely required to have this as a webmaster. It helps engagement drive to your forum, so you're missing out when you disabled this setting.

If I remembered correctly, one of the forums I used that the feature wasn't enabled is Forumexplorers.com. I made a remark about it but it wasn't enable and I think that's happening with Admin-junkies.com now.

AJ has problems with their email setup, I never received emails since the new owner.

You're right about that. I think it was a problem that started with the merging because it was happening on Forumexplorers.com before the merge took place and AJ started having the same issue.

As a forum owner, if your email setup isn't enabled to send emails to your members, I wouldn't consider the website owner being serious with his project. It's among the basic things to check out and make sure it's working fine.

Push notifications is vital these days and if a forum doesn’t have it, then the owner of the community doesn’t care about the engagement about his forum.

It’s highly important nowadays and its a key feature to have enabled.

As a forum owner, the default for all new users should be for all notification methods to be ON. Then afterwards they can opt out or make adjustments.

There is one forum that I am on that uses IPS like I do, but they do not have "Follow this topic and notify me of replies" turned on by default when you comment on a thread. I can easily forget about that discussion for weeks when I don't get an email or even a notification when I return to the site. That forum is struggling lately and I think this mistake is part of the problem.

A forum owner who neglected doing that is truly not serious about how to run his forum because even him will me kept out of the loop as things happens in his forum. He can't be online 24/7 to see everything happening.

This is a forum feature I love and I also like how you can have it enabled on some forums but can also disable it on forums you wouldn't like to be notified about.

There have been many times that I have not checked a specific forum for a while for whatever reason but if I get a notification of a DM, I jump straight there to check it out.

Some forums I know have been having issues with emails bouncing, specifically Gmail emails which can cause a problem for some webmasters.

Honestly, I always turn off the notifications myself when a forum does this and it's solely because I am someone who will check the forum when I check the forum. I don't like having email after email about someone who replied or reacted to one of my posts. I can be a busy person so getting these emails can be a little annoying. However, I do enjoy having the notifications on the forum itself so when I log into the forum I can get an update on what's been going on since the last time I've logged on. As far as email goes though, I tend to turn that off just because I am not one to reply right away or feel like I have to rush to reply.

What's your take on this forum feature?

Forums are finicky when it comes to sending mail.

Many hosts are setup to be very strict on that in order to prevent email spam.

I've always suggested that forum owners get something like Kit or Mail Chimp and do a newsletter so that they can handle sending larger-scale audience-based newsletters.

Forum email systems are crap. All of them.

You typically have to use something else aside from the default email system.

My take is this - if you're not getting on my forum frequently to see what's new, are you really even that into my forum?

I am very much in this boat for most of the forums I use too, Administrata being one of very few exceptions.

I hate email notifications. My emails are for important things... I'll get to forum notifications and PMs when I have the time to. :p

YES! Thank you! I'll get to the notifications when I get to them but I don't need them bombarding my email and then I've got to delete so many emails. I'm glad someone agrees with me ;)

This is why it’s important that your DKIM email authentication is set up correctly, so your emails aren’t set to spam.

If it’s not properly set up, the forum will have an issue with all emails being set to spam.

I always tend to have issues with emails not being sent. I think I'm not properly setting up my emails. :S It's important to have your email system working, that way if someone is trying to reset their password they don't have to rely on an admin to reset it for them.
