What's the most toxic social media platforms you've used?

Posted

There's a reason why some people are no longer interested in making use of social media platforms. This is because of how toxic and unfriendly people on those social media sites behave when dealing with others. They make the online environment so uncomfortable for people.

What's the most toxic social media platforms you've used?

I completely agree with you. Twitter/X is one social media platform that if you don't have a tough skin, it's going to be very difficult for you to last a day on that site.

it's going to be very difficult for you to last a day on that site.

Or even a few hours...

And it's not a site for liberal-minded people either 😒

Twitter, and that was long before Elon Musk took over and made it worse...

I joined Twitter in 2009 and I’ve witnessed a lot of things on there.

It’s a shame that it’s no longer the same platform that it used to be.

And that's why people are flocking to Bluesky in their millions...

I don't use any social media really anymore except for work-related purposes... they've all, in some degree, given in to toxicity, hate and division. Facebook was the first platform I stopped using and that was in around 2013. From then on, I migrated to Twitter, and found that it was generally quite well moderated and generally a safe platform.

I started using Twitter again a lot during lockdown in 2020 after a long break, and found that it had already at that point began the creep towards becoming a lot more tolerant of hatred and being pro-"free speech". Since the Musk takeover, I think I've probably visited Twitter for personal purposes about five times... it doesn't interest me anymore. It wouldn't surprise me if in 10-20 years documentaries are made about how social media grew into a breeding ground for terrorism, violence and child abuse.

Between actively using only two modern-day social media sites, Facebook and Reddit, I would have to say Reddit could be somewhat toxic at times due to the sheer number of people on there who "attack" you for voicing an opinion that they're not in agreeance with. I don't visit any social media websites anymore unless they're from a Google search.

You’re absolutely right. Bluesky just recently surpassed 25 million members and they were at 18 million members in November. They’ll more than likely surpass 30 million sometime in January.

Twitter still has over 300 million members though, so it’ll take sometime for Bluesky to really put a dent on Twitter’s numbers.

Twitter is hands down the worst and most toxic social media platform that I've used. I never used Truth Social, but I'm sure it's another cesspool. Some parts of Reddit can be toxic, but most of the bad subreddits were removed a few years ago. There's still a few questionable subreddits that should be removed, but I don't know if they ever will.

And a higher percentage of those are bots than in the past, no doubt.

Holder of controversial opinions, all of which my own.

I really don't use social media other than Facebook for the family and Tiktok when bored at work.

For me Facebook and Twitter are two of the most toxic social media platforms.

Seconded on Twitter!

Same. I only use it on a rare occasion now. I’m more active on Bluesky and Threads.

I still have a few friends that use Twitter so I keep in touch with them on there.

Some social media can be terribly toxic. For me, Twitter takes the crown. I have seen numerous examples of hate speech, harassment, and bullying on that platform. These days, it feels like an entire marketplace of negativity.🤣
