Posted November 17, 2024Nov 17 I remember using some of them to varying success, most notably freeforums.org, Zetaboards, Icyboards, and Forumotion. Last i checked, the former three defunct long time ago, and Forumotion faded into obscurity. What happened to these? Was it because times have changed, or was it because better websites appeared?
November 17, 2024Nov 17 Forumotion is still going - whether you call them Forumotion, Forumactif or any of the other brand names they call themselves. Choice of hosted forums, choices of features, they never went anywhere. Icyboards closed due to the owner having time commitments and not wanting to sell. Zetaboards I believe sold themselves to Tapatalk during the latter's buying spree - a bunch disappeared during this time, including the once mighty Invisionfree. The reality is that for a lot of these, they weren't super profitable, but they could make money during the boom years. Latterly, not so much. Holder of controversial opinions, all of which my own.
November 17, 2024Nov 17 Administrators Most from Icyboards were converted to Jcink. While sporks didn’t want to sell out (even though Tapatalk tried), he did offer the possibility to export the database free of charge.
November 17, 2024Nov 17 Author I see, Tapatalk acquired most of these hosters besisdes Icyboards. Even FF.org?
November 17, 2024Nov 17 ProBoards is still kicking and strong. I remember using ProBoards around the time they first launched. Forum Owner and Blogging Help Another Admin Forum
November 17, 2024Nov 17 ProBoards is still kicking and strong. I used ProBoards only once in my life and it didn't last long due to losing interest in the type of board I ran. I would be interested in giving it another whirl if I could think of a new forum I could run on the software, I would like to learn more about it. Don't forget about Jcink, the forum software I currently use. It seems dead as a doorknob when you frequent some forums and many of the larger forums have closed down over the past years, but I gain anywhere from 30 to 50 members a month, surely there's still some interest in the software. One person joined my board's Discord channel recently and said my board was the only active resource board he could find, so I guess that's why I gained so many new members.
December 13, 2024Dec 13 Content Team The first ever forum I created was hosted on a free forum hosting site called myfanforum.org, when I was about 11 years old if I remember rightly. :ROFLMAO: Thinking about this sent me on a mini trip down memory lane... I just navigated to the domain where there used to be a form to fill out to setup your forum, alongside a support forum for owners to get help with their sites. Unfortunately it seems the domain is now parked with some spam ads or something on it. Shame. :( Looking to grow your community and encourage engagement? December 14, 2024Dec 14 Content Team Like others have mentioned most of them were sold to Tapatalk or just shut down. There's still plenty of free SMF hosting websites, in fact they're all owned by the same guy VBgamer. He also owns Createmybb, the only free mybb host that's still online that I know of at least. Love roleplaying games? So do we on RPG Haven!
December 17, 2024Dec 17 Best free forum hosting I used back in the days was ZetaBoards. Was a very active community. DiscussionHQ - General Discussions https://discussionhq.com/index.php
