Gamification can motivate users through rewards, but it can also backfire if overused. Have you implemented a point system, leaderboards, or badges in your forum? Did it increase long-term participation, or did it create unhealthy competition? What is the true impact of gamification.

Yeah, point systems and the like are fun, and I have used them in the past on XenForo. Anyway, I'd like to try it on a phpBB forum, and I've seen one forum use some unofficial point system (not approved by phpBB.com).

Credit systems are fun to implement but they can a pain to figure out. It took me awhile to get the hang of the XenForo Dragon Bytes points back in the day.

Yes, gamification can significantly improve forum participation. By introducing elements like points, badges, and leaderboards, it motivates users to engage more actively. Gamifying tasks such as posting, commenting, or completing challenges can make participation more enjoyable and rewarding.
