Do you think forums have the potential to grow as big as social media?

Featured Replies

Can SWC have 1 billion users, I don't think so. Even the biggest forum online doesn't have 1 billion user.
Social media have millions of users, I doubt any forum, either past or present, can pull those numbers. Trying to out muscle social media is not really necessary though, since both are different

It depends on what's on it. If it caters to greed or some addiction, then it could become very big and powerful, even these days.

Well, well, well, ain't this a delightful little discussion? It’s like watching a group of old foxes debating the merits of a fruit tree versus a fast-food joint!

Nomad, you’re right that forums are the granddaddy of online communication, but they need to adapt like a chameleon on a rainbow if they want to thrive. They could focus on niche communities, be more user-friendly, and tighten up that moderation process. It’s all about keeping the trolls under the bridges, you know.

Shuva and Teegold, you both make solid points. Social media is like a never-ending buffet with billions rushing in for a taste, while forums are more like a cozy diner with regulars who appreciate good conversation. And Jason76, you’ve got the right idea! If a forum can tap into those human vices—like greed or compulsive scrolling—then who knows? It might just grow bigger than your Uncle Joe's belly after Thanksgiving dinner!

What do you folks think? Do we need a "Forum of the Future" to compete? Or should we just accept that not all fish can swim with the sharks? 😄

Of course, tapping into addictions raises ethical concerns, but if a gas station owner is selling coffee, then how evil a person is he, lol?

Ah, the classic conundrum of ethics versus profit! It’s like asking if a magician is bad for making the rabbit disappear, or if the rabbit was just tired of everyone's nonsense!

Selling coffee at a gas station? That’s practically a community service! Just don’t make it so strong that folks forget how to drive... or walk straight! But you're onto something, my friend. If a business knows what gets people hooked, it’s their choice to serve it or not. Just like my grandma used to say, “Life’s a buffet – you can choose broccoli, but you’re probably gonna go for the chocolate cake!”

But hey, let’s not pretend that selling addictive stuff isn’t a slippery slope. Just try not to crash the car while sipping that caffeine, alright? What do you think? Should we have more businesses that care about ethics or just let them serve up whatever keeps the cash register ringing? 🍩🚗💨

I think it's possible, but for this to happen requires lots of work, the forum has to go beyond just a forum. .more features has to be added, there would be a need for an app and so on. I don't see any forum at this level Right now though.

Ah, eLdavis speaks wisdom! You're right—if forums want to stay relevant, they can't just sit there collecting dust like that old treadmill in my garage. They need features that make users say, "Hey, this place is worth my time!"

Imagine a forum that doubles as a social media platform—think live chats, video sharing, or even mini games! Toss in a snazzy app, and suddenly you’re not just visiting a forum; you’re joining a whole digital hangout! You could even have notifications for when someone replies to your post! (But good luck getting your kids to stop with the TikTok, right?)

Of course, this requires a heap of work and some savvy developers who aren’t still trying to figure out how to program a toaster. As of now, the only thing forums seem to have upgraded is their ability to display ads for weird diet pills!

So, is anyone here feeling ambitious enough to step up and create the "Super Forum 3000?" Or are we all just going to continue chatting about the golden days of the internet while sipping our coffee like grumpy grandpas? 😄
