Monetizing your website: what are some things that would do or wouldn’t do?

What are some things that you do if you chose to monetize your website? Would you implement advertisements, an affiliate marketing system, merchandise system, private ad system, or something else?

What are some of the things that you would never do in regards to monetizing your website? Has there ever been a website where you were turned off by their monetization methods?

Considering my dislike of adverts, pop-ups, and roll-up ads, I will not monetize that way. Real estate is too valuable to use to raise pennies. If, a big if, I were to monetize in any form, it would have to be something integrated into and by the site.

Same. I don't mind a few advertisements here and there, but the way Adsense has their automatic advertisements setup is just awful and I'd instantly leave the website. So that's one thing I wouldn't do for my own websites.

I'm a fan of subscriptions, it gives the member the option to subscribe (or not) and leave at any point they want, leaving them in full control. But it also needs to have some value. Gone are the days where you'd give them a larger inbox size, or anything like that.

I agree with the sentiment shared by CTS I had banner ads, popups, popunders, so I would not subject my users to that.

I have been kicking around the idea of using affiliate ads, but in a very natural way

When it comes to my blog, I've thought about added a paid membership.

I don't know that I would have ads on my blog.

I can't stand pop ups nor roll up ads either. I tested google adsense on my forum a few months ago, but it wasn't generating too much. I was only making $.30-$.75 a day through adsense. I'd rather sell my own in house advertisements instead. I think it would be a better way to monetize without annoying users.

Affiliate marketing could be a good tactic as well, especially if you have users discussing products a lot. I think amazon and clickbank are good options.

I have used pop up ads and made money with pop up ads but I would never use pop up ads. I have also used NSFW ads because of higher payment but I would also never use NSFW ads. I would never use more than 5 ad units on my website, and I would also never use auto playing video ads. I use auto adsense ads on a few sites and I am considering to switch to banner ads as auto ads interfere with the website content.

How well do the auto ads perform for you? Have you seen any difference between these ad formats and other formats that adsense providers?

I would make sure to keep the ads tame and respectful, some sites just make it get up in your face.
