Posted October 14, 2024Oct 14 Administrators What domain provider do you use? How long have you been using them? I’ve been using Namecheap since 2004 and its my preferred domain provider. What about you?
October 14, 2024Oct 14 I use Namecheap as well. I used to use GoDaddy way back in the day, but I've heard so much negative criticism about them these days. Namecheap is also the domain registrar that the forum software I use recommends.
October 14, 2024Oct 14 I use namecheap, but i have some domains on cloudflare, since they sell at cost.
October 14, 2024Oct 14 Administrators I have a few with Godaddy, and a couple from my hosting company.
October 14, 2024Oct 14 I used to use Google Domains until they sold out to Squarespace. I moved most of the domains over to Namecheap. I use HE DNS for the DNS for the sites.
October 14, 2024Oct 14 I win auctions and they go into NameBright or other registrars like GoDaddy, but I'll eventually consolidate them into Dynadot because of their Bulk and Super Bulk discount pricing. High security to protect my valuable domains too ($XXXX~ purchases). https://www.dynadot.com/domain/tlds-prices?price_level=1 Typically, I'll consolidate when they have transfer promotions of like $8 to save even more, and extend the expiration date by a year, if they land in other registrar accounts from aftermarket purchases, Escrow transfers, or other means like expired or dropped domain auctions. That is, unless I paid in excess of $1000 for the name, then I'll immediately transfer it to Dynadot once the transfer lock is removed. Their prices are a bit higher, even with Bulk discounts. However, if you follow their promo codes and sales (like Black Friday), you can time renewal pricing to be essentially equal to the rest. And, greater peace of mind with security. October 20, 2024Oct 20 I probably should consolidate; I have some stuff on 1&1 (well, Ionos now) and some on Namecheap, pretty sure Namecheap's prices are lower at this point. I do also own a few .ly domains which you're pretty much only getting from register.ly.
October 21, 2024Oct 21 Been a Hover customer for over a decade now. Decent pricing and never had any issues with them either. I do have a domain over on Namecheap as it was the lowest price at the time, I might bring it over to Hover sometime in the future though. I like to consolidate things, which makes organizing better.
October 22, 2024Oct 22 I have found that Namecheap has been the best place for me to use for my domains. I used to use GoDaddy but since moving to Namecheap, haven't wanted to use anywhere else.
October 23, 2024Oct 23 I've used DreamHost for over 15 years. I use it for my domain registration and my VPS.
October 29, 2024Oct 29 I only use Namecheap, I won't use another domain registrar unless they have a good coupon.
November 3, 2024Nov 3 Administrators Does anyone remember the free domains like .tk and name.sytes.com?
November 4, 2024Nov 4 Does anyone remember the free domains like .tk and name.sytes.com? I remember .tk, didn't they have some sort of catch for using the domain?
November 4, 2024Nov 4 Administrators I remember .tk, didn't they have some sort of catch for using the domain? IIRC, there was an advertisement or something.
November 4, 2024Nov 4 Moderators I registered my first domain through Namecheap in 2015 and since then I have never used any other domain registrar. There was a time when I had over 30 domains with Namecheap but these days I have just 5 domains.
November 4, 2024Nov 4 They're all fairly samey. I have recently moved all my domains to Namecheap for easy management. I don't see much difference between registrars.
November 6, 2024Nov 6 I mainly use my hosting company to register my domains because I don't see me moving to another place anytime soon! But I do use hosing24 / Hostinger
November 9, 2024Nov 9 Content Team I wouldn't say I have a "favourite" as such, I used to use GoDaddy when I was younger and run my websites. I've registered a couple of domain names lately for upcoming projects with Names.co.uk, simply because it was high in the Google listings and they had a special offer for cheap registration fees. I only need to buy the domains and set the nameservers, I don't bother with any other services domain providers provide as they're generally sub-par and overpriced.
November 9, 2024Nov 9 I used GoDaddy for a long time, changed over to Namecheap about 5 years ago and just stay with them,
November 18, 2024Nov 18 Cloudflare is the best currently for price and privacy, especially when coupled to their DNS services.
November 18, 2024Nov 18 Cloudflare is the best currently for price and privacy, especially when coupled to their DNS services. When my domains are up for renewal I'm switching them to Cloudflare.
November 18, 2024Nov 18 I use Namecheal for all my domain names. I don't even consider other domain providers.
November 18, 2024Nov 18 It's apparent by the replies on this topic Namecheap is one, if not the most popular domain registrar, maybe for message boards at least. I assume Cloudflare will gain more traction as time passes.
December 17, 2024Dec 17 Content Team I really like Namecheap and purchased almost all my domains from them. The only one I bought from Cloudflare was for my personal portfolio website which I still need to update. :V
December 18, 2024Dec 18 Content Team I still maintain my earlier position in this thread that domain providers are almost irrelevant. The only services you should be purchasing from a domain registrar imo is the registration itself. All of their other services are available elsewhere at a better quality and a better price, of that I can assure you. As I said before, my domains are registered with Names.co.uk. I set the nameservers to my own hosting and I've never visited Names.co.uk since and won't do so until I need to either register another domain or renew my current ones.
December 19, 2024Dec 19 They should be. They are, however, not at all equal. Putting aside the domains that have specific registrars where you can't get the domain except through specific companies (you aren't buying a .ly from Namecheap), there's some registrars that take the proverbial with pricing. For example I just looked up adomainthatdefinitelydoesntexist.com on Namecheap and saw it was for the expected $10 or thereabouts, while Network Solutions wanted $11.99, defaulted to 3 years rather than 1, and gave me multiple screens of up-sells before I'd even seen the basic price of a domain. And then there's cases like iwantmyname which made the news last week after Funko Pop (yes, that Funko Pop) and its AI-powered brand protection service flagged a page on Itch.io for trademark violation. This caused the domain provider to unilaterally suspend the domain entirely until a human could be reached to verify it. Itch.io isn't exactly a small hobby site, either.
