Cool forum, but for some reason, it runs a little slow from time to time.

It's hosted on his home servers and his area got hit by Hurricane Milton so it might be a little spotty sometimes.

I got sick and the site was left online unattended. Those users registered for the 4 years it laid dormant. When I decided to re-open I found it had never been offline. I was greeted with a ton of spam all caught by the spam filters. I removed all the spam, upgraded from xenforo 1.2 to 1.5.24 and opened it up. Then I upgraded to 2.3.3.

So all those members came from the site being left unattended. The spam filter worked to keep the posts in the queue.

There is a post about it. Wanted to let the new users know it wasn't any sort of thing I did.

As Shawn said the servers were right in the path of hurricane Milton. Power has been shakey. On then off. The generator keeps up. There are lags as it takes over. Should stabilize in the next few days.

You have your own servers setup? That's so cool. :D Can you share any details on that?

I have 1 bare metal server running vmware vsphere. Specs are xeon 6640E processor, 96gigs ram. On it I have 2 Windows 2022 Standard servers. One as a dev server the other for the sites. I have 2 internet providers. Spectrum and Verizon.

I've been hosting my own servers for a long time. It's much easier to fix things when the server is in a room in your home

That's definitely true, but you'll need some knowledge too. And not to mention, continuous power to it. I imagine you need to do some regular maintenance to it and thus reboot it sometimes ?

Being Windows I have it set to pull updates once a week and if required reboot.

I have a generator dedicated for the server and internet. Of course during extended outages the generator struggles. Internet is the problem. I can keep my end up. It's the provider that needs to keep theirs up.

I don't think I've heard of (m)any forum owners hosting their forum on their home server or even having a home server. That's pretty neat!

I'm glad you are safe from the hurricane and the board should stabilize soon!

Been doing it for over 20 years. It just made sense. I've had business class high speed internet with static IP's since 2002. It makes everything easier. Only cost is for electricity that powers the servers.
