Promoting your forum on social media isn’t just about posting links—it’s about engaging with users and building relationships. If you want people to join your forum, you need to create meaningful interactions and show them why it’s worth their time.

These tactics can help Promote Your Forum on social media:

- Ask open-ended questions related to your forum’s niche to spark discussions.

- Run polls and conversations that encourage users to share their thoughts.

- Reply to comments and DMs to build genuine connections with potential members.

When people feel heard and engaged, they’re more likely to check out your forum for deeper discussions.

By Showcasing the Value of Your Forum

People join forums for knowledge, entertainment, and a sense of community. Use social media to highlight what makes your forum special:

What social media platforms have worked best for you when promoting your forum?

Have you found any platforms that didn’t help much?

Do you think social media is necessary for forum growth?

I've used Facebook mainly to promote my websites but in the past I've used Twitter and recently used Bluesky to promote Thee Zone after the TikTok ban happened. I need to promote more I think on Bluesky, I've also tried promoting on Reddit a little bit after asking permission from mods and got quite a few members on Gex Forums that way.
I don't use social media to promote my site for several reasons: 1.) I hate most social media platforms, 2.) I feel a forum of my type is better promoted on the platform itself, and 3.) I would maybe attract more spammers and trolls than legitimate members from time to time.

Is there a specific reason why you would use Twitter?

It’s tough to promote on Twitter if you’re not a premium user as they throttle links now and your posts aren’t seen as much if you’re not a premium user.

Mainly Facebook, X, Bluesky, and YouTube.

Typically Facebook and YouTube are the bread winners when it comes to conversion.

I don't think so. It doesn't matter if you have a premium or not but if you have a genuine 100k or more followers on your Twitter account. I guess that works well.

Oh I forgot I used Youtube in the past to promote my websites too, but I feel like it didn't really help much. I also had only 100 something subscribers then and I'm getting closer to 400 now. That's not a lot, but hey maybe it could help. :P
I've tried all social media platforms when I had my mental health forum... and unfortunately, it didn't get much traction on either. if I were to rebirth my forum, I wouldn't use social media... however, Instagram has gotten bigger and more traction over the last year and might be successful if you were to create a page for your forum, or blog :)

We don't use social media except other resource boards, yes we have have a social section, games section and stuff like that, but they're small. We are primarily a graphics/themes support board. We have people dropping by making requests and we prioritize quality graphics for people. By doing this we have had great traffic as a result of word of mouth. We have been away for a couple of years and only just starting it up again and cleaning it up. We have had some really large successful boards in the past but decided on a resource board instead. Sometimes it is active and sometimes it is slower, but that is fine with us. We just plod along doin our our thing.

I don't do a lot of promotion on social media because based on my personal experience social media audience and forum audience are different breed of people. People who are more used to seeing visual content on social media might never take interest in forums that mainly have text based content. However, if I have to use I mainly use facebook and X.

Instagram works well too. Their pages actually show up on the search engines, so it’s a great way to promote your forum on there.

Including your forum link on pictures can help a lot.
