The internet is packed with forums catering to just about every niche you can imagine, but it got me thinking—are there certain types of forums that feel a little… overdone?

For me, video game and general chat forums seem to be the most oversaturated right now. Don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome to see so many people passionate about these topics, but standing out and attracting traffic in these niches has to be a real challenge with so much competition.

What about you? Are there any forum niches you think have been done to death? Or do you have a fresh take on an overdone niche that could still stand out? Let’s hear your thoughts!

Definitely video game and general chat - in spite of the latter being eaten mostly by social media.

Surprising amount of sports forums out there, too. But this is a genre I have zero interest in personally so my view on it might be distorted in terms of how popular it seems.

I'll have to admit it's a general discussion forums. I see them poping up all over the place, and most of them crash down for obvious reason: There are too many of them, and people are bored to say the very same thing all over the place. Kind a gets annoying over time (at least for me).

General chat and general gaming forums tend to be oversaturated in the forum world. It's funny that I say that though, I own a general discussion forum. Promotional forums used to be oversaturated, but I haven't seen as many of these forums popping up lately.

I don't think any niche is overdone. Competition is healthy, and it keeps us on our toes when we're trying to be on top.

Competition is never a bad thing, but when you go from forum to forum and see the same types of discussions it can get to the point where they are oversaturated. The internet is naturally repetitive though; you'll find the same topics everywhere.

I'd really like to see some more promotion forums. But they must have an actual purpose of promoting on them.

I agree and the ones that stay afloat are the ones who work harder.

I agree and the ones that stay afloat are the ones who work harder.

The ones with dedication, passion, and the drive to keep improving their forums are usually the ones that last the longest.

However, working hard alone isn’t enough to keep a forum alive and ensure long-term growth. You can work hard, but without genuine love and passion for your niche, it won’t survive forever.

Worth noting that even genuine love and passion are not eternal wellsprings. It is entirely possible to love something with all your heart but then need to recharge. My experience has been the strongest forums - and the strongest owners - are the ones who let the community refuel the passion.

it is but everyone has a different mind set which goes back to earlier post by cpvr about Dedication, passion and drive are the key factors. When you lose interest and recharge that is losing the drive.

Good point, it can be difficult to find the right balance, too many replies/posts by admin can actually stifle community engagement.

I’ve never seen anyone sustain the required level of passion for a decade or more without there being some form of recharging going on, even if it’s the community doing a trickle charge. People cannot forever pour their heart and soul in without a top-up, no matter how strong the desire is.

If you’re telling me you can, you’d be the first forum owner I ever saw in more than 25 years of participation.

I’m in much the same boat, still on that refresh before getting truly back into the swing of things. Onwards, upwards, we’re all good here :)

Gaming is probably the most saturated niche of all for all website types and entities.

General forums could be one as well.

Either way, it's important to try to "narrow" or "niche down" if you choose these topics. How can you make yours unique from the rest?

I have a general forum (Off Topic Forum), and I have yet to figure out how to make mine unique, but I'm working on it. It takes time and research.

But don't let saturation stop you. If you can build a community with a saturated niche, that's really all that matters.

I agree with this. Yes, there may be a lot of the same niche or themes but sometimes competition is good. However, if every forum you go on seems to be the same threads and the same posts then really it can seem boring and overdone.

sometimes competition is good

I think competition is always good if it is done in a healthy way. The world is big and it is absolutely possible to co-exist. Unhealthy competition can be very bad not only for the forum owners but also staff and general users. I know how bad it can be because I have been a victim of unhealthy competition. I was removed from a staff position from a forum without any reasons and without asking for explanation just because I also posted on the rival forum. Unhealthy competition can take a nasty turn.

There is way too many gaming forums lol.

I think it might be on par with sports and music forums. Both are highly competitive niches, which makes them a lot more fun. 🧟‍♂️

The gaming industry is a broad niche because it involves so many different games and consoles. This means there are plenty of areas to explore and cover within the niche.

The biggest gaming forums I think are:

https://forums.pcgamer.com/

https://www.resetera.com/forums/gaming-forum.7/

https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/online_gaming

https://www.avforums.com/categories/video-gaming.517/

https://www.neoseeker.com/forums/pc/ - it’s still using vBulletin 3.
