November 12, 2024Nov 12 It's about time. Love that feeling. What's it about? It’s overdue in some respects. It’s still a lot fuzzy in my head as I think about the different elements I want to bring into it (or not, I have very extensive notes but some are less relevant than others now), but it’s about writing. I’m thinking about resources for writers, reviews/comparisons of writing software (there’s quite a lot out there in fact) I am of course thinking about all my tech choices - I have licences for XF and IPS I could use for this without any trouble but I am of course trying to weigh up if I need to bring in AMS or something else if I go XF. Trying to not get bogged down in the technical fluff though. There’s plenty of other things to do in content first, and I’m in that period where I’m full of ideas but it’s not clear which of them will survive or become something else. Holder of controversial opinions, all of which my own.Â

November 13, 2024Nov 13 I've been doing a project on IPS, but I'm not sure if it will see daylight. It's adult themed and I'm not sure if I want to proceed with it. I thought it was an interesting concept but I could see it needing careful moderation. IPS is promising, and I think for a project like yours, probably the better choice. Especially with the customization possible. Pages also look very good and with some knowledge, able to turn in something absolutely satisfying. But the code in XenForo is easier. Well, that's my opinion/experience of course. I’m not above writing my own plugins for either platform (not like this is particularly hard in the scheme of things) but there’s a lot of questions about how much forum and how much non-forum this project turns out to be and how much I care about the article experience over other things. I have some ideas for features that give me an edge which will need custom dev in any circumstance (and incidentally some of those features could have been made into unexpected.ly’s original purpose, but would sit better part of something more cohesive) Holder of controversial opinions, all of which my own.Â

November 23, 2024Nov 23 Yeah? In a good way though? A lot of it is simply different rather than good or bad. It's not like SMF is my only experience of writing code, I spend a lot of time in Laravel which is completely different again (and I've built stuff on Laminas which influenced XF in its history) Though it would really help if it weren't so cold in here. I live in an old building, it's a bit drafty and despite having the heating on, sat on the sofa with 2 jumpers on and a blanket, I'm still cold which isn't doing much for my motivation. I am loathe to move my fun laptop to my study because that's where the work laptop is and I'd rather keep them separate. (Not that my desk has enough room for another laptop) Holder of controversial opinions, all of which my own.Â
