Bluesky, the social network, announced on Monday that it now boasts over 10 million users. This surge in growth is primarily due to the rapid expansion of the network in recent weeks, following the shutdown of Elon Musk's X in Brazil.

“If you’re reading this, you’re one of the first 10 million users on Bluesky!” the company celebrated in a post. As a fun feature, Bluesky has an easter egg on its homepage: clicking on the celebration emoji reveals your user number, which you can share with friends.

In the previous month, Brazil’s top court imposed a ban on X and penalized users attempting to access the service via VPN. Following this, social networks like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky experienced a spike in popularity, quickly climbing to the top 10 rankings in the App Store and Play Store under the social media category in Brazil.

Bluesky gained 3 million users within days of the X ban, pushing its total user base beyond 9 million earlier this month. The company reported that more than 85% of new users came from Brazil. Last week, Bluesky saw record activity, leading to a few server glitches due to the high volume of new sign-ups.

Bluesky, which had been operating on an invite-only basis for nearly a year, opened its platform to the public in February. Meanwhile, its competitor, Meta-owned Threads, has grown to over 200 million users. Recently, Bluesky introduced new features, including the ability to post videos and self-moderation tools, such as controlling who can quote a post, hiding replies, and muting specific words for a set period.

It's a milestone for Bluesky. Ten million users is no joke and it reflected hardwork and perseverance despite the stiff competition in the landscape. I think the achievement is largely due to the network's rapid expansion following the shutdown of Elon Musk's X in Brazil

A lot of my liberal friends were posting on Facebook to try to get more of their friends over to Bluesky. I already had an account there for business, but didn't feel like letting them know about it, but that's because I'm a conservative. It sort of felt like when my conservative friends were leaving Facebook for MeWe...it didn't quite pan out. At the beginning it was all fun but then people dropped off and now it's practically dead there. Will Bluesky have the same ending?

I’m not entirely sure as Bluesky has the “feeds” feature instead of just one dedicated feed, so users can choose what type of content you’d like to interact with.

They’ve been doing quite well so far.

It’s also possible for a developer to create other things using Bluesky’s platform, so that’s something that makes them unique

Now, if we can just keep Elon from buying it in the name of truthfulness.
I don't use social media, but I hope Bluesky continues to flourish if it remains a decent, civilized network. Too many social media networks these days have turned into toxic wastelands.

It’s kind of impossible for Elon to buy it as Bluesky is open source.

Anyone can literally launch another version of it.

Their code is available on Github.

Un-Buyable: Bluesky’s open-source DNA makes it untouchable by big-money takeovers. If someone ever tries to hijack it, anyone can recreate the platform and keep it alive. It’s like social media with a built-in insurance policy.

It would suck if Elon managed to, and merged it with Twitter/X.

Let's just hope that this doesn't happen. Bluesky continues to keep growing every day. Also it's not as Left leaning like people think it is, you can control what you want to see and block content you don't want to see on your feed unlike other platforms. I like it better than Mastodon too, since it's pretty much just one centralized platform so it's easy to sign up and log in.

I noticed the other day that Bluesky is ranked higher in the Apple App Store than X. 😀

I don’t think it’ll happen as Musk can’t even run Twitter correctly. He’s good at running Telsa and SpaceX, but that’s it.

Twitter doesn’t even turn a profit and now he’s suing some of their advertisers now.

If someone wants to see a platform rot and go to crap, Musk is the answer.🤣🤣

Elon Musk's X is suing more companies, alleging they joined a group of advertisers illegally conspiring to boycott the social media platform.

On Saturday, Musk's lawyers filed an amended complaint expanding its 2024 lawsuit accusing the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), an advertising industry group, and member companies of violating antitrust laws after he bought the platform formerly known as Twitter in 2022. The original lawsuit alleged they “conspired” to “collectively withhold billions in advertising revenue” and specifically named several companies including CVS, Mars, Ørsted and Twitch.

The new complaint adds Nestlé, Abbott Laboratories, Colgate-Palmolive, Lego, Pinterest, Tyson Foods and Shell International to the list
