I've noticed that some admin forums and gaming forums take forever to build and that it takes a good chunk out of your time to make these type of forums bigger. I also feel that some forums get lucky and find success quicker than others. But remember, the harder that you work, the more success you may find in the forum world especially on the internet.

So, in your opinion and being involved with forums for so long, what type of forums do you feel are the easiest to build? How about the hardest to build?

I think general discussion forums are the easiest to build. They're a bit more difficult to get activity on though, so that's one downfall of starting one. However, you can easily come up with fresh, new content to your forum since you could literally talk about whatever you want. As for the hardest, gaming forums are pretty difficult to pull off these days unless you have one that's based around one specific franchise. Even then if it's something that's really popular, there's probably already tons of communities based around that one series.

It's general discussion forums I would say is the most easiest to start out. It doesn't take so much and there are millions of topics that can be started on it. Users can easily get into it. Coding, promotional and admin forums are quite demanding to start.

As someone who has created and built up a general discussion forum in the past, they are easy to start up but not the easiest to get activity on, it can take a while and you can sometimes feel as though like giving up so you do need a plan and you do need to make sure you tell yourself that there are going to be roadblocks.

The hardest forums I would say are gaming forums to create, open and build up.

Easiest by far would be a general forum because it's very general and there is a lot of different conversations you can have. I find a niche forum would be a lot more difficult because 1. You have to be knowledgeable in the niche, you have to be able to come up with a lot of different discussions about the niche and you also have to find the people who are interested in that niche.

If you have a general forum it's easy to come up with a lot of different conversations/threads but if you have a niche you have to stick to that theme when posting, unless you're posting in the general section of the forum.

What do you think are some of the key factors that make a general forum easy to start up compared to a gaming forum?

I would say it is the wide range of topics that can be discussed within a general chat forum that make it that little bit easier as opposed to a gaming forum.

I agree with you here, Shortie, however i don't think i can say what type of forum is harder to open but, if i have to pick i do agree gaming forums for sure, and Graphic design as it's not as big as it used to be if that makes sense

That does make sense, I feel with so many sites and forums around for gaming and graphics, that is very much two niches that seem overly saturated and hard to get into now if you are looking to build a successful forum.

I think general discussion forums are probably the easiest to start for many of the reasons mentioned above. However, I feel that the generalized nature of a general discussion forum also leads towards difficulty in maintaining momentum and creating a long-lasting project that retains community engagement. General boards also go up against social media a lot harder due to the conversational nature of the genre.
