General Ever ran your own wiki?

I recently started a wiki project pertaining to the National Forest and state parks in my region.

I'm excited about it but I'm guessing that I'll be the only one editing it for a while at least.

How about you all? Have any of you ever started your own wiki before?

I have, and I remain the only editor, mostly so that anything that does come out of discussions gets managed by me for consistency.

Essentially, my wiki is the encyclopedia of a fantasy world, it has all the lore that exists, cross referenced and made as consistent as possible, so that the rest of the writing group has a reference.

It also has a couple of custom MediaWiki extensions, one for handling the Google Maps integration and one for integrating Pinterest boards into some articles (e.g. mood boards for different provinces to give a feel for the different types of architecture)

Back in 2008 or 2009, I installed a MediaWiki instance on our Linux server at work. We then proceeded to move all our IT documentation to it, taking full profit of all the linking features, tags, and knowledge management tools. It was a great intranet Wiki back then.

It was awesome and we were quite a bit ahead of the curve. Folks were impressed that we had "our own Wikipedia for our IT stuff!" LOL

Later, probably in 2012, we moved it to Confluence, which was way more user-friendly in general at that time. Still MediaWiki is a very good platform that's relatively barebone, but very versatile.

I left this place in 2021. During the year prior to me leaving, I moved all our IT documentation to Dropbox Paper. The reason? Confluence was getting more complicated over time. And Dropbox Paper is so easy to edit and move documents around. You get what you need in a split second, and you can update it if needed, in another split second.

I have never thought about starting a wiki page to be honest. I am not that tech savvy lol! But I'm happy for you for starting a new project, that's always exciting!

I have never started any wiki project, but many years ago I registered a couple of domains for wiki websites. I did not have resources to fund my projects and I could not find funds, so I shelved my projects. I don't even have those domains, I let them expire

I'm excited to hear how your project is coming along @Shawn Gossman! Like I've posted previously I've never had my own wiki page but I would love to hear how your project has taken off =)

I've never run a Wiki myself, but I was part of a Wiki Contributor team for a large game I used to play. The game Wiki had thousands upon thousands of pages and needed regularly updating, so volunteers would do that.

The idea of having an internal intranet based Wiki for staff-based things at work sounds really interesting and like a great inventive use of Wikis though, and potentially gives me ideas...

I currently have one going right now, but I'll admit I haven't really been keeping up with creating new pages or updating the theme on it. It's a forum wiki dedicated for documenting any and every forum software, whether it's still around or not. It's powered by Mediawiki because I think it's the best wiki software. I'll need to add it here sometime.
