I'm not sure about nowadays, but in the past, Bit.ly used to offer a service where users could get paid for any visits to links they shortened. The rate was low, something like $2 for every 1000 Unique Visitors generated (and sometimes lower depending on the country of the traffic) but it was useful to make a few extra bucks at least if you had a high traffic link to be shortened. :)

Yeah, Facebook pages or groups are another form of community that some forget about sometimes. Another one is also gaming communities - I play a few text-based RPG games that have a "community" in the sense they have a chatbox, known characters and active chatters who talk on a variety of topics, not just game-related.

I am not a fan at all. As others have stated, I can see some very limited example use-cases where it might be appropriate - technical support forums, roleplaying forums and the like. I recently saw an AI bot replying to threads/posts made on a forum within a couple of seconds. The content is clearly AI-generated and as a member is really de-motivating to see - I initially thought, damn, someone replied to my thread fast! - only to find out it was an AI bot that literally gave a message that was almost a direct prompt from ChatGPT... ugh. :sick:

From a member's perspective, the ideal Moderator imo is one who's "seen but not heard" frequently. By this, I mean that they don't take moderation actions publicly - that's one of my bug bears. From an administrator's perspective, my ideal Moderator is someone I can rely on to look after the forum when I'm not around. They need to be reliable enough to be able to be reasonably active (even if not constantly posting), and need to be able to work off their own initiative in order to resolve any problems that do crop up. Of course, I'd also expect my Moderators to be active in the community, but for me this is a secondary consideration behind their abilities as a Moderator to fairly judge situations, take appropriate and decisive action and not need hand-holding. :)

I've mostly used shared hosting services for my projects, and am currently using a shared hosting service (at Hawk Host) for my current project that's on the go. I've paid for a VPS once in the past, when I was running a large forum that had hundreds of active members daily. The traffic we had was high, lots of guests, lots of search engine traffic, and we had a lot of things aside from the forum itself that required significant bandwidth - so the decision wasn't too difficult once we'd reached that stage. A VPS was much more expensive back then (around 2012 or so) than it is now - if I recall I paid not far off $150 a month for our needs. That being said, the income of the site more than covered this and then some, so it wasn't a financially ruining investment, even though I was a teenager at the time. :P

I'm quite surprised that Bit.ly is even still around nowadays. I remember my early days on the internet, back in '07 or '08, where every teenager and his dog seemingly was trying to get thousands of clicks on Bit.ly links to make a few bucks. I think I may have even tried it myself one day very early on. Surprised they're still in business, to be honest. Plenty of URL shortening services out there now that are essentially ad-free.

I'll accept payments through any method that's reasonable easy for me to setup and access. To turn down business because of payment method issues would be crazy for me, so I'll always do everything I can to work with a client to find a mutually agreeable payment provider. That being said, just for ease and low fees, and not having the worry of chargebacks or disputes, I do prefer to accept payments in Crypto where possible. Alternatively, the second choice would be PayPal - while there is some risk of chargebacks/disputes, I personally have only ever lost one dispute on PayPal and I put that down to just being a freak unlucky incident (probably dealt with by an idiot PayPal employee). Not going to let one bad experience taint things for me!

I've got to be honest - I've never found anything that offers quite as much as WordPress does. Especially for a free software. Joomla is a good alternative, but I wouldn't use it personally unless there was some specific reason WordPress wasn't appropriate - the customisation and longevity of WordPress, coupled with the millions of sites using it and thousands of developers actively making plugins etc for it makes it the no.1 option in my eyes. The website run by the charity I work for uses WordPress as it's base, although is heavily customised to the point you wouldn't really realise it was a WP site - this is what I love so much about the software.
