Content orders
Those kinds of requests are fine and are generally how the Content Team will handle larger orders anyway. Sometimes we may not have 5 members available for your order at once, so one member may make 20 threads, but generally, we'll do our best to accommodate your requests if possible, just add them into your post when placing your order. :)

GTA VI leaks
Thread title says GTA IV, but I assume you mean GTA VI. Regardless, these sneak pics look awesome! I wonder when the game will actually finally be released, seeing as it's been teased for about ten years and delayed no less than five times... I'm really looking forward to it!

Hiring website administrator
I've once again responded to anyone who's sent me PM's regarding this. There's been no agreement reached yet although some people have expressed an interest, so if this is something that interests you but you haven't contacted me yet, or you've contacted me but I've asked for some more details from you, please feel free to get in touch! Ideally, I would like somebody to be beginning work on this project as soon as possible, and certainly before Christmas if at all possible, although I completely understand that somebody may want to take a break over the Christmas period itself. :)

What are the key indicators that your community needs a change in direction?
My biggest forum used to struggle a bit with a downturn in activity at roughly the same time every year - the end of the Premier League football season. In order to counter this, over the years we refined things to give more of a focus towards our off-topic sections towards the end of the season, running competitions and encouraging people to stick around and talk about upcoming transfer news and pre-season football. I suppose most forums have natural cycles of activity - a forum about BMX riding for example is surely naturally going to be more busy in the summer when people are actively riding and quieter in the winter when it's cold and people aren't out as much.

Managed to bag myself Wednesday and Thursday work from home duties this week, and only have to go into the office from 2-6.30pm tomorrow for a special event. Well pleased with how it worked out this week! :p

Staff to Member Ratio: What's yours?
For me, I always like to recruit one moderator at the outset of a forum, or fairly early on. I'll then likely manage the forum alone with that single moderator until we reach a point whereby we're getting 200+ posts a day. Then I'll probably look for the second moderator. At that point, we'd be pretty much set in my opinion until there was significant additional growth, I personally don't see for the need for anymore than 2 moderators alongside one or two admins on almost any forum that isn't super active. My biggest forum had 4 admins including and about 8 volunteer moderators who each volunteered set 2 hour periods every few days to complete moderation tasks. That's how we worked on things, anything urgent was flagged via a reporting importance system for urgent mod attention, but generally, our moderators volunteered to do at most 3-4 2 hour shifts a week working through the report queue and performing mod actions. At all other times, moderators were encouraged to be normal members of the community and not worry about the smaller things. This was a forum that at its peak was sometimes exceeding 5000 posts a day though, so this level of staffing with our relatively lax policy on what we asked of staff was probably just about right. Myself and the other admins dealt with some stuff that was relatively low-level and quick, and our Lead Moderator was often on the site for 4-5 hours a day so managed to keep on top of a lot of things.

(Task) Play a game to earn 250 Credits!
Hi Administrata I play a fun text-based game that you can play on either your browser or your mobile phone via an app. It has thousands of daily players. I'm looking for referrals on the game. I'm looking for people to sign up on the game via my referral link, and play through to at least level 10. In return, I'll give you 250 Credits! If you decide to stick around and play further, I'll give you an additional 100 Credits for every 10 levels you gain after level 10. In the interests of full transparency and expectation management, I should say that this is not a super quick task, but it is one that is fun and very easy! If you take the time to read the guide that I will send you if you sign up, completing this will probably take you around 15-20 minutes playing the game per day for around 6-7 days in order to reach level 10. If this sounds like a Task you'd be interested in to receive 250 Credits upon completion, please send me a PM and I'll send you the referral link along with some brief instructions! Thanks fdk

Do you play the lottery?
When there's a EuroMillions rollover jackpot, or a National Lottery must-win special jackpot, I'll usually buy 2 tickets if I remember on my way home from work one day or something. I've won a couple of hundred pounds a few times, but never any life-changing amounts... yet. Maybe next year will finally be my year. :)

How do you identify potential moderators for your community?
I've never once posted an advertisement for a member of staff on any of the forums I've run. I personally just feel that generally people volunteering themselves for a role are more likely to not be a great fit. That's not true in all cases - certainly some people volunteer for a position on a website out of a genuine want to help grow that site & be a part of it, but some can want it for the wrong reasons. With that in mind, I've always taken the approach of privately approaching members I considered to be a good fit for my moderation team when a spot became available. I had a lot of members politely decline, saying they weren't interested, which was absolutely fine - after all it was a volunteer position, and I was grateful to anyone who'd take on some additional responsibilities out of a wish to help the forum. I generally found that by approaching people privately, having a discussion, and asking them for their help, I was able to build a fantastic, dedicated and genuinely interested moderation team that was solely focused on helping the forum thrive & continue to grow.

Why do people buy forums and just leave them to die?
I'm a current vaper, and I'm a little worried about your assessment that I might die soon! :ROFLMAO: I could definitely get on board as a part-time contributor to a Vaping Forum, fyi... sounds interesting...

How much have you spent on your website or forum in terms of USD?
That's exactly right. We were only able to make that kind of investment through slow initial growth and then a small upfront investment from me once I understood that the site had potential to reach the next level. If I recall correctly, my total spend on the site before it started to generate an income was in the region of $500 - which was a lot of money for me as a teenager back then - but this spend was done over the course of close to a year, while the forum was growing and I was still learning a lot about becoming an administrator. I was very fortunate that around 18 months after starting the forum, during our first phase of what I call "sustained activity", where we had 50 or so members posting a total of around 500 posts a day (double at the weekends), we had two people join the forum who each donated $150 to the site when we floated our idea of providing a betting service using the forum currency. Coupled with an additional $200 investment from myself, this enabled me to pay a developer to build the plugin and pay for the integration with the API provider, which is what I believe led to our first big explosion in activity. When the feature was released, over the course of the next month, our daily active users went from 50 > 250, and we sold $1,000 worth of forum currency/upgraded member subscriptions that month. It was this initial spark that ultimately was what enabled the community to grow into what it eventually became. I took $100 of that money, bought myself and my family a lovely takeaway and went to the cinema, and put the other $900 straight back into advertising for the forum. Within another six months we were getting 3-4,000 posts a day and our member count was in the tens of thousands, and over the coming months our site grew to become what was essentially a small business run from my bedroom that for just over 2 years earned me between $1,000-$3,000 a month.

How much have you spent on your website or forum in terms of USD?
Yeah, our expenses weren't always that high, but once we'd rolled out a lot of features on our site and our traffic was growing on a monthly basis, the costs soon added up. Well, it was around 10 years ago so I can't remember exact lists of individual costs, but I know the total was somewhere in that range most months. Staffing costs/contributions cost us upto $500 a month, which might include some ad hoc small payments made to developers working on plugins or additional features for us, or graphics we were using in advertising. Our advertising budget was a minimum of $500 a month, but sometimes went as high as $1,000/month, depending on the time of the year (period in the football season) when it was most efficient for us to advertise. In addition to this, we had hosting costs of around $300/month as we had grown so large we needed to be hosted at the time on a dedicated server that had a 24/7 response time of 30 minutes to any technical issues on the hosting side of things. Then we had monthly bills to a couple of API providers, who provided us with data feeds to run things like an interactive betting service on our forum, using forum currency, and a live commentary service that provided direct on-site feed to a forum thread with live text commentary of Premier League football games, updated roughly every 7-8 minutes, which back in 2012 or so, was quite a feat, something only really done by major media providers. All of this made our bills in the region of $1,500-$2,500 a month, with some fluctuations, but as I said previously, I don't recall a month where our income didn't cover our costs, and of course, when we first started out, our costs were in the region of $50/year for the hosting + domain name only, these costs only developed as we grew into a huge community.

Google Ads Experience
Hi Administrata I've mentioned in previous posts both here and elsewhere that I've previously had a very good experience using Google Ads on one of the large forums I used to run many years ago. While I had success both generating revenue with Google AdSense, and gaining additional visitors and members to my forum using paid Google Ads for advertisements, in this post I'm specifically talking about using paid Google Ads to grow traffic, membership and engagement to your website, whether it be a blog, static website or forum. Has anybody else had any experiences using Google Ads, whether positive or negative? I'm interested to hear about any other experiences, especially if anybody has used Google Ads more recently (as in within the last two or three years), but even if your experience was older than this, please still share! :) I may write a guide in the future on the optimal use of Google Ads for growth, but I will wait to see what the demand for such a guide would be as it would involve a decent amount of work. Look forward to hearing all of your thoughts and hopefully reading and discussing some of your experiences!

How many threads do you need to make on a daily basis?
As a general rule, when first starting out, I'll want a minimum of 30 threads posted on the forum before I open it up for public access. Otherwise, the place just looks deserted, and there's no reason for any potential new member to view the forum and want to join. During the opening stages and the first few days or weeks, I'd be looking to create a minimum of 5 new threads daily - so if others weren't creating that amount of threads, I'd create however many needed to top up the number myself. There needs to be a reasonable amount of activity and a reasonable diversity of topics to attractive new people to want to contribute, in my opinion.

Have you ever been involved in car accident?
I was knocked off a bike when I was about 11-12 and bulls-eye'd a windscreen. Ended up getting rushed to hospital on a spinal board with glass embedded in the top of my head and me crying like a little girl. Astonishing as it is, I had literally no lasting injuries - and rather unbelievably, the accident occurred at about 10am and by 6pm that evening I was playing football at my local club. It was undoubtedly really scary as a kid having that happen, but luckily as I said, no serious injuries so I was absolutely riding my luck that day!

What's your favourite football team?
Well, Liverpool are almost guaranteed to now have 20 league trophies in a couple of months time. Plus 6 Champions League trophies, 8 FA Cups, 10 league cups, and various other assorted trophies. It's pretty clear for anyone with a knowledge of the game to see that Liverpool are by a country mile the best team in the world right now.

Merging vs locking threads
Hello all, Thought I'd make a thread to share one of my own personal tips from many years of running a successful forum, with relatively few moderation issues in comparison and a generally happy memberbase. So, a member posts a new thread, but there's just one problem - they've posted a thread on a topic that's already being discussed elsewhere, potentially multiple times. In such a situation, many moderators or admins resort to locking the newer thread, and directing the member to the existing thread. Why do I consider this to be (generally) bad practice? Simply put, taking moderation action like this against members feels punitive in nature, despite your best intentions and despite what you may say in the post you make when locking the thread. A member seeing the thread they took time (however little) to make being locked is discouraging, and is more likely to dissuade them from posting another thread or adding another contribution in the future. OK fdk, that means sense. But what's the alternative? Just let all these threads pile up? No, absolutely not! Take advantage of the "merge" feature that is built into all (if not almost all) major forum software packages. Instead of locking the newer thread, merge the thread into the existing thread. Perhaps consider leaving a temporary redirect in place in case the poster of the newer thread goes back to look for it. Alternatively, consider sending them a PM informing them gently that there was already a topic about what they posted on, so you've merged the topics together, and send them a link. In my experience, this greatly increases the chance the member will continue to contribute to your forum, it greatly reduces the chance they will be unhappy with moderation action taken on their post, and while it may be just a few extra seconds work for your moderator/admin team, it's absolutely worth keeping your memberbase happy in my opinion! Please feel free to share your own thoughts, and look out for more short fdk topical tips in the future. :)
