fdk interviews frm
Member Spotlight Interview - fdk interviews frm Welcome to Administrata's first ever Member Spotlight Interview. I'm fdk, and I'll be interviewing frm today and I can assure you we have a great interview for you to read! This is the first of several planned Member Spotlight Interviews over the coming weeks and the goal is for us to eventually have several Interviewers willing to undertake interviews from time to time. Let's get to it! Q1: When did you first sign up to a forum, and why did you join? How long after joining that first forum did you begin the journey on your admin career by starting your first forum? What was the first "big" mistake you made as a forum admin, and what did it teach you? How has your experience as an admin developed your technical skills in general? Do you manage your own forum's hosting and updates for example, or do you have a technical person who takes care of that side of things for you? Are there any skills you think you've learnt being a forum admin that you've been able to use in your real life work? What do you feel is your biggest step in learning from the first forum you administered to your latest projects? I've read some interesting posts about the merging and creation of what I'd personally refer to as "super-forums", with a "one-login, multiple-forums" type system and I believe this might be an ongoing interest/project of yours. What can you share about that, and what gave you the idea in the first place? One of the principles of ROFLMAO seems to essentially be "free-speech" and low-level moderation. This is great for some, but do you envisage any problems in the future with Government's potentially legislating to give "publishers" more responsibilities in relation to moderation? You referenced Section 230 which is absolutely important for sites operating in the US, but a lot of forums and websites have members from Europe & the UK, which are looking to implement their own laws & systems like GDPR which they will look to enforce worldwide. Do you envisage this being a potential stumbling block in the future? Could you picture a circumstance where you might decide that forums weren't for you anymore, and stop being a forum admin? If you were not running forums and especially if you were not working on your current project, what do you think you might be doing work-wise instead at this time? It certainly seems that you've developed a lot of technical knowledge over your time as a forum admin. Was this knowledge mostly self-taught, or have you engaged in any sort of formal computer science/technology training or education? This has been the first edition of our new Member Spotlight Interviews! If you enjoyed the interview, please leave a like and add your comment. Feel free to leave your own questions for frm too, which he may choose to answer at his leisure.

Have you ever wanted to create a forum for a specific niche, but didn't?
I've been a football (soccer for Americans) referee since I was a teenager and I've always thought about wanting to open a forum specifically for referees. However, there's already a couple that are fairly well established, and any attempted challengers to them have died a quick death just due to them being such a niche use and not particularly active for small chunks of time. (off-season) I don't think I ever will venture into creating this type of forum, but I do still think about it from time to time. :p

Adopted Security Measures
Personally, I'm confident enough in my own security to not need to take many "active" steps to secure websites I run. Aside from making sure security updates/packages are installed as soon as possible when available there's not much else to do. A lot of my time when running a forum previously was spent dealing with members who had their accounts compromised. If I was thinking of running a decently sized forum/website again anytime soon I definitely think I'd be taking advantage of 2 factor authentication options (as I already do for my own website admin logins) to prompt members into maintaining good account security procedures and minimising the risk of needing to help with account recoveries.

Should members have the right to delete their post?
I wouldn't allow members unrestricted ability to delete their own posts, just because it's too easy for a member with a grudge or who is unhappy about something to go on a mass deletion spree and break up threads and conversations. What I've done on past forums is allow members to delete their post for a certain amount of time after posting (probably something like upto 12 hours after posting) in case they change their mind. On a case by case basis, I'd consider requests either via the report system or email to remove specific posts/threads, but it was a rare occurrence. On occasions where members did get in contact asking for all of their posted content to be deleted, I reminded them that as part of the Terms of Service they agreed to upon registering, they agreed to give an irrevocable license for the content to be used by the forum. Legally, you are required (at least in the UK/EU) to remove a member's private data upon their request, but this can be done via "scrubbing" the account via the admin panel and I believe some forum softwares now even offer this as a sort of "built-in" admin function.

Forum Discovery
I also tried to replicate this as soon as I saw the thread posted this morning, but couldn't replicate. ForumDiscovery and the link in the topbar worked for me at all times and still does now, I've not seen any issues. A quick Google search does bring up a lot of blog posts and discussions of Avast false positives, so it could be an issue like that if you've not seen any problems since.

Community Chat Thread
I'm in the UK, and I have to be leaving for work at 7am sharp (about two hours after the Super Bowl ends...), I'm going to try my absolute best to stay up to watch it but if I'm honest I don't fancy my chances given the fact I have work for the first time in a couple weeks the next day. It'll be a shame if I do miss it as I've watched the last 5 in a row since really getting into NFL back in 2019. :(

Trump Closes USAID
BBC News - What is US AID and why is Trump closing it down? Just been watching my regular dose of news and seen this. Trump has done many things since his inauguration, many that many Americans agree with, many that many in the world agree with in fact. - This has to be one of the worst decisions ever made by any politician in any country in the world. Sorry if I've let my political views come across a little there! (in reality, I don't really follow a political party or identify as left or right wing, but hey) Surely most right-minded people can see that this is an absolutely terrible idea, and will cause immense pain, suffering and cruelty throughout the developing world? There's talk that a federal Judge has issued a limited order blocking some aspects of the executive order effectively dismantling the agency. Not sure where that will end up, but seeing as Trump effectively controls the US Supreme Court at the moment, I don't hold out much hope. What's the thoughts of those of a political persuasion here at Administrata, whether or not you live in the US?

Should you continue to add content or step back at one point?
I think it's important for admins to always continue to actively participate in discussions, but naturally, over time and as a forum continues to grow, their participation will reduce slightly to account for other time they're having to invest in maintaining and running the community. I'd always say that an admin should be aiming to at the very least reply to all/most posts in any suggestion/feedback/announcement sections, and should be aiming to make at least a few replies to regular threads on their forums each week. The more engagement, usually, the better - but at the same time, it's rarely positive to have the feel that the "most active/contributing" member on a community is the admin/staff members. Absolutely - admins and staff should really aim to be the most active and contributing members - but ideally, they shouldn't be seen to be so. Makes sense in my head anyhow.

25 threads/50 posts
Hi frm I'm back after a short time away for personal reasons and plan to complete my part of this order over the weekend. Giving Cory a little poke on his part too. I've updated the acceptance post with a new estimated date of completion. Thanks so much for your patience and understanding! :)

Implement a good trader system
This is a great new addition, but if I might make one observation and/or suggestion - if there is no feedback given, the profile postbit shows "Rating 0%" - this is a bit unclear at best and might lead some to think that person is not particularly trustworthy, even though there's essentially nothing to base that off. Might I suggest removing the feedback part from user profiles where the amount of feedback given is 0, and only activating it showing on the postbit once a member has received at least 1 feedback rating?

Community Chat Thread
Good afternoon all! It's been a while since I've been super active on Administrata - recently had to deal with a bereavement in the family which was a really tough time, but I'm getting close to being back to "normal self" now. Ready to return to work next week and ready to get back to my online activities. Hug all your loved ones tight and make sure you tell them you love them! And smile at a stranger next time you're out, you never know what people are going through in life. Love all you Administratans! :)

Secret Valentine Gift Event – Spread the Love! 💝
9 packages bought from me for all those who've recently used the Content Orders service and/or are super valuable members of our great community, thanks to all of you for being a part of this great community and if I missed anyone please don't take offence, it's likely that I either thought you probably didn't need/want a package, or I genuinely just forgot you, sorry! :P
-
What decade were you born in?
I'm a 90s kid too (late 90s). I remember very, very little of the 90s itself, though. My earliest real memories are from the very early 2000s, around 2001-2002. For example one of the first ever memories I have as a child is seeing an image of the Twin towers burning on a news report on TV. That's not a fond memory of course though, just one of my first. As for fond memories, the summer FIFA World Cup in 2006 was probably my fondest memory as a child, I remember our school was super cool about it and would let us watch the games and I think we watched every game or thereabouts of the World Cup that year. When we weren't watching football, we were playing it. I love memories like that!
