Cross Browser Compatability in Design
Edit to add: XF 2.3 OEM style I recall back in the day where you had to make sure your site looked the same on Explorer, Netscape, Opera, etc. And you did because there was always that something. I learned something today while styling my new website. I opted for the dark oem templates and style properties. Had it kinda looking good on Chrome, which is my primary. Today I had a need to view it in Edge. Low and behold, Chrome will remember dark styling as a guest vistor, but Edge defaults to XF Light. I know now that xf default dark is not the default style fed to the guest visitor. It is default light, even if you have dark set for all usergroups. I didnt know this because because chrome decided to remember, and didnt give me a clue. But Edge clued me in. I did have to install a tiny addon and adjust style settings to make it work tho. Andy has an addon to force dark default to guests. I also changed the default style to unselectable. That will produce an error but it will stick. Verified step by step on Edge and Chrome. Anybody else run into this? What were your solutions?

Do you tend to join/avoid sites that use a certain forum software?
Sites that have no mobile view drive me nuts. I don't want to pinch and zoom every page and scroll back and forth. I rarely would register an account in this case, unless I had a need.

Russia is Banning Discord
In fairness, I country blocked Russia at the Zone level at CloudFlare. China and North Korea also. I have never received good traffic from those countries.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
OK, all seems to look good short of a real-world shakeout and load test. As I suggested, I finally opted to go with a niche that I find both entertaining and fun. I did not go full open topic as as said, as is a bit overdone and doesn't do it for me. So I went with a couple domain names that I haven't had any real application for since buying them in a basket of names. So, I hope its entertaining at least. I decided to make a base look and feel using the oem style and template layouts. No template edits, some style property edits, and a smattering of addons that help with my objectives. I want to make updates as smooth and easy as possible. I really need a new header image though, the placeholder image right now is just temporary to get some imagery on the site. I want to avoid too much imagery as it seems too busy to look at, so just basic forum icons. I went with a category-less design as I felt it cleaned up some real estate as well as the niche really doesn't need any. Cleaned up and trimmed off a few unnecessaries just to make usability nicer. The only content I have is what I have posted to at least put something everywhere so it isn't completely empty. But hell, the site is only a week online, and content is a lifelong endeavor. So, I am getting there.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
Well, not necessarily satisfied, but I needed something up there to give it some sense of a look. So I have a header image now, but I feel it will be replaced soon. I opened it up today to the public, just to help hammer out any bugs and getting a simple load test. Verifying my cloudflare and analytics settings are properly setup and communicating.

When is it appropriate to send a mass email to your members?
Plus you need to keep in mind, if you over-spam your opted-in users, sometimes they won't complain to you. Instead your emails get marked and stuffed into their spam box. You want to avoid getting your outbound email addy listed in spamhaus type listing's because then your emails may not even get through the recipients isp as they will pre-identify it as spam and just blackhole them forever.

When is it appropriate to send a mass email to your members?
I use two rules. Never send to an opt-out addy, and try not to send out too many, for the users sake.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
Ok, have the functionality, basic layout, feature set, forum schema, forum/staff/member permissions completely gone through. I cant say everything is perfect, but I have a good baseline of what I want and can go from there. I am still running a stock color dark scheme, minus some alterations, no template edits, minus extral.less. But, my worst skill, getting imagery and eye candy right. This will take some work on my part. Meanwhile building up some content.

The lack of feedback, and whether it is appropriate
I love feedback of any flavor and I abhor banning members. I feel communication is key, and if you have enough time to notice him/her, then you have enough time to drop a PM and just say hey and hows it been going. Sometimes communication is all thats needed. But then there are those others that dont want that,...

If you could go back and create your forum again, what would you do differently?
I think I have violated all those and more at one time or another. Coincidentally, I am on day 3 of a new fun project, and seeing the OPs post as well as my prior experiences, reminds me of things I do need to consider while building this out. I wonder what new mistakes I can discover lol. But I do tend to try different than norm things from time to time. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
Yes temporarily unfortunately. I have only worked a little on esthetics so far, so it ain't much to look at. Plus it's offline at the moment.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
Well I dunno about the career part lol. Spent the last couple of days setting up the look n feel layout. Basing the style off of default dark styling. Avoiding all template edits except for extra.less of course. Minimal add-ons hopefully. And setting up forum structure and perms. My goal is to make upgrades and updates as easy as possible, and as user friendly as possible. Aside from base colors, I am going to save putting lipstick and eye candy for later.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
(Hope this is in the right forum and prefix) Kicked off a new XFcloud instance yesterday, and spent part of the day hitting the basic settings. I decided on a niche domain. One I will explain later but is something that I will find fun and entertaining. I used the case study prefix to indicate it is a fresh project posting as-i-go type format.

How hard do you find it to build a target audience?
I agree with everybody, but I am left with the question: What exactly is the granular definition of a target audience? I mean, every niche has an audience otherwise it wouldn't exist. I may have missed the point of the thread and responses, but I was thinking that finding your target audience was more like finding out how to get your name in front of their eyes where they may be looking.

Domains you don't know what to do with?
The absolute best advice you can give. Yes you can register those type of domains. No you don't have a legal right to own them. No you don't want to cross over into trademark dilution issues. It can end up badly.

The Share an Admin Mistake Thread: What Did You Learn?
Sent out an email batch that included mailing to opt-out addresses. I had to apologise to members that got upset about the spam.

Domains you don't know what to do with?
I thought parking was a dead horse nowadays. I remember making decent penny parking, but its been over 10 years lol. I don't miss it. That it a tricky thing to do. You don't want getting caught dropping a domain that only made a quarter a year parked, that someone may want. My last sale was on a domain name that hasn't resolved anywhere for over 10 years. But it finally paid off handsomely. That said, yes, I have dropped many names over the last few years as it is hard to get $5k on any of them. Let alone reg fee. Times have changed. So I just pay the fee on what ones I like and want or want to sell, and I don't pump them on parked pages, sedo, or the likes. My sales have been mostly organic and off of the whois contact info. edit to add: the reason I do not pump them or list them is because you expose your position to other domainers that tend to bug the crap out of you with lowball offers.
