Do your forum members use mobile?
I’m habitually an iPad user. I find phones an inconveniently sized device to do much of anything on. But I’m very aware of the folks that are mobile users - even to the point of those who write 500+ word posts on mobile.

This ain't an airport, no need to announce your departure
Yup, the “I’m sorry I need to leave because things have happened” is fairly rare, my experience is that these people either PM folks, or disappear and then announce the return. The flouncing kind, though, that’s sadly common.

On the other hand, you can get into a weird situation where such a member doesn’t announce their departure, they just go, and then you get posts of the form “whatever happened to…?” Which can be almost as bad.

Should forum owners be subject matter experts?
The problem with a little knowledge is that a little knowledge correlates to a much higher estimated confidence level about that knowledge. Dunning and Kruger’s paper on the subject feels relevant.

What is the minimum investment need to start a forum?
We will see what we can do. It might take us a bit longer than just 2025 to dethrone the existing folks, though!

Community Chat Thread
Nah, because I’m pretty good at keeping all the content on the current iterations of device, it’s just old devices that needed wiping.
-
Community Chat Thread
It was mostly because wiping them is tedious and annoying and it was easier to put into a box and pretend not to care :P

Excluding work laptops and our current laptops, there's still 2 of mine to wipe in the box and 2 of my wife's (so, we'd collected 9 in the house). Plus assorted iPads and iPhones and junk like that. (I currently have 3 iPads on charge, you can tell how old they are, they all have the old wide 30-pin dock connector on them) Actually now that I look at it, one of those iPads is a first gen iPad, and one of those is the one I bought to take to America when we did our big road trip (I explicitly went out to buy one with 3G so I could use it on the move) I also have a PS3 and a Wii to toss out but since they have games as well I think they'll skip recycling and go to the local Cex (buy-sell-exchange) place. Heck, some of the Wii games came from there originally, but they aren't going to give me the same price back I paid for them years ago!)

I started off the new year with excitement. Well, I say excitement, but in reality I'm not sure how exciting it is. Basically my wife has been nagging me to clear out the old laptops and electronics we have because I'm a paranoid weirdo who's convinced my identity is going to get stolen etc. and that can't happen if I never throw out my old laptops! But she correctly pointed out that I promised "more than 2 house moves ago" that I would, and so I am. I have already taken 3 laptops, an old camera and an old iPod to the recycling. Next round has already begun - I currently have a fourth laptop plus 3 old iPads on charge so I can do the scrubbing.

Wordpress VS WP Engine
The first point is interesting but ultimately a damp squib IMO. The second is vastly more important. Yes, WP is a Matt project first and foremost. You can't not price this in with your equations in terms of whether you choose to use WP or not. The problem is, Matt's - if I can be blunt about this - a bit of a dick. He has an ego that demands stroking, he has a level of pettiness that is rarely seen and he has demonstrated a level of petulance and spite in recent times that do not endear him to his would-be customers. It's also become more clear that what he wants out of WP is not in line with what the community want, and the community are just unpaid labour for him. It's fine if the community are getting what they want out of it but it's become increasingly clear that's not necessarily the case.

I think the OP already sold all theirs but they can update you if not.

xenForo Licenses For Sale
Yours from the official site for the low low price of $195. Second hand ones don’t ever go much below $150, if nothing else because they’ve lost some of their value.

Do you own any .community forums?
Namecheap has .community at a set price (barring the price gouging that is 'premium') which lists as £28.59, renewing at £30.17 - which will be more sensible in USD. I see .forum is now more reasonably priced than the 3-figure prices they debuted at, hah. I do own a .community, that I bought with a particular intent but it hasn't come to pass. Maybe it will in 2025, we shall see.

2025 Forum Goals
I'd love to have a meaningful 2025 goal. We shall see, things are maybe in motion.

Design agency can create your dream project into reality
It’s an agency of one person. While similar to being a freelancer, this is clearly about building a brand (eventually to hire more people, one assumes) rather than making it about themselves as a brand. Mind you, I have questions about a brand identity based on intentionally misspelling a relevant word - in much the same way I don’t think I’d want to trust my phone to a repair shop called Fone World.

Happy New Year from Administrata!
Let's make 2025 something to remember, for all the good reasons.

Design agency can create your dream project into reality
Why can I not find either of the case study clients online? (Also, pro tip: listing yourself as a case study in why you’re awesome is…not the best look)

The use of AI bots on forums
I think if you’re going to have AI on a forum, there needs to be some question of what value it brings to the forum that isn’t otherwise met. On a support board, the value proposition is a maybe-helpful but timely response. The roleplay site I’ve seen it done with, where it’s people writing responses back and forth with AI is again a timely-response problem (though there is some internal bias of who someone chooses to, or chooses not to, write with) There are valid other uses for AI, or more precisely machine learning, in forums: think about categorisation of images (are they NSFW), suggesting categories for content if the user hasn’t picked one. There’s also people doing things with moderation - looking for profanity, toxicity, bad sentiment. (I saw a few years ago that a university was using forum posts with sentiment analysis as a signal towards if a student is going to drop out or otherwise have a poor outcome) What these all have in common is the use of AI/ML to find commonalities and to offer up “this is like that”, which is even what the generative stuff is doing, whether it’s finding solutions to common problems or it’s having a partner willing to spar with you on demand (where the goal is simply to enjoy the journey rather than to meaningfully advance a meta narrative) Most of the rest of jamming AI every which way doesn’t provide value, so should be given the contempt it deserves.

Day 1 Forward- Something new
Yeah - there's a difference between 'the journey until launch' vs 'the journey after launch'.

Members That Always Complain
Are their complaints legitimate? Ae they on topic? If they’re not on topic and it’s just a bad vibe, ask them if they’re OK. Assume that on the other end of the line is another human being with thoughts, feelings etc. and it just might be that they’re having a bad day/week/month/year. The real question is whether it is fundamentally disruptive. If so… consider moderation but probably don’t reach for it as the first, last and only measure.

A trip down memory lane: The Evolution of Invision Community
It’s the same thing, or was 20 years ago. All of the “InvisionFree” stuff was directly taken from IPB 1.3, the last version to offer a free edition. That came out in autumn 2004. Invision Power Services, the company, realised that having a free edition, supported by paid sales, wasn’t going to sustain them and pulled the free version after that (a move which has been bitterly referred to as betrayal ever since, but those who do conveniently ignore that if IPS hadn’t, they would have gone under because the paid folks just didn’t cover the costs enough) Jcink and others did various things to modernise it in small or not so small ways but the DNA all goes back to IPB 1.3 in 2004, even though Invision of today looks nothing like its ancestor.

The use of AI bots on forums
I think there can be a place for bots but it’s not every community. Consider a support community where the people are asking questions and searching for answers - a bot can certainly offer a suggested answer. Depending on the question it even stands a shot at being in the right ball park. I have even seen it in a collaborative writing community for “I have no one to write with right now so I’m going to use a bot to write with” but this feels very much like an outlier.

I think you need to have 90 days of renewal left to be able to transfer.

Do you tend to join/avoid sites that use a certain forum software?
Given the lack of other major features actually being shipped, I strongly doubt this is the reason.
