Forums are not as popular as they once were.
True. For now we look at sites like Reddit, which is categorized, and see how easy it is to interact. I think IPB had the right idea when they created a thread view option for users to use. Categories in the sidebar like subreddits and all the meat and potatoes in front of you. Discourse is gaining popularity, some might say it is the number forums software for enterprise at present, and the reason is because the way data is presented. Plus their search does really work. Don't know what they did. Maybe python and postgresql is just that much more efficient.

How to load your websites at lightning speed
All good tips. I have compression turned on for all websites. I also have output caching on and set for until file changes. This serves most old content from the disk cache. Windows/IIS compression and cache are very powerful. I also have Opcache and acpu cache enabled. Acpu to cache db queries and Opcache to cache what IIS doesn't.

Invision Community v5 enters Beta
I've installed it a few times now and didn't have any problems. I run Windows/IIS which they say isn't supported. With 3.x I had all kinds of problems. Since I've dove back in things have ran very well with 4.x and 5 beta. I have run into a few 500 errors. Those are all from the way IIS handles foreign characters. Have to turn on request filtering. Other than that it works extremely well.

Forums are not as popular as they once were.
You hit the nail right on the head. By using categories and then a number of forums in those cats we are making it harder for users to find things. Couple that with the fact that forum search is inherently bad. Better than it was. Still not good. I use Google to search a forum for what I'm looking for instead of forum search. We as admins are familiar with the layout we been using for years. Some admins are ready for change. They don't know how to do it in a easy way. Some admins are headstrong and will never even consider changing. Maybe because of loyalty to a particular software product. Maybe because they are afraid to step outside the box. In any case a change needs to happen.

Sidebars - Yes or No?
Seen that many times. There are probably hidden staff forums that the admin will see. Doesn't realize without them you create white space on forum list.
-
Sidebars - Yes or No?
It tends to clutter the index. Like Al I never interact with it. I have the option to collapse it for users that don't need it.

Forums are not as popular as they once were.
The decline started about 2007. Established forums were going strong. Start ups had to work hard to get going. Then about 2010-2011 forums overall started to lose traffic and users. Many established communities had already sold out to big corps. Start ups struggled to get going and most quit. The decline had nothing to do with forums themselves. It had to do with the software. It never evolved. New forums on platforms like Discourse are gaining popularity again. The users that prefer the old dated linear layout are dwindling fast. Us as forum owners have to adapt.

Sidebars - Yes or No?
Slowly removing them. I do have a style for users that prefer sidebars.
