  1. I don't believe it screams desperation. I think it's a good thing that staff is posting daily, it shows that they care for their community but I don't see desperation. Unless if the quality of the content they were posting was a bit lacking, maybe one line posts then I could possibly see it as desperation to keep the forum alive. Even then, as long as one person is engaging in conversations is the community 100% dead? It's only dead when there are no longer conversations, the staff and members have abandoned it and it lies dormant. That's how I see it anyways.
  2. It depends on the person. There are people who are capable of managing more than one forum, but not everyone can. You need to be able to focus on each one and make sure none of them fall behind. If you do get overwhelmed, your best bet would be to see if another person could take over or merge your existing communities together.
  3. I really like this community! It's much better than any Guilded server or Discord server for that matter. Best of luck with your community!
  4. Moderators should help admins by keeping the community running smoothly from a user's standpoint. If there's any trouble going on between members a moderator should take reasonable action to help resolve any problems. They should also contribute to the community by adding engaging conversations and interacting with other members. Also they should keep the community clean by moving threads when necessary or locking threads.
  5. I think sidebars are fine, they can easily display important information about your forum. They can also be an effective way to show ads too, and can help other communities if their links are in sidebars on other communities. As long as it's not too cluttered of course.

Both Trump and Putin are terrible leaders. Obama was the best president we had in my lifetime so I would go with him.
  7. I always go straight to sending staff a private message if I see that they're inactive or haven't been keeping up with their job. Communication is key for any relationship, doesn't have to be a romantic one! It's tough letting go of staff regardless if they've been staff for a while or just a short time because you felt that they could do the job but in reality they couldn't. You should let go of staff when you see that they're not contributing to your community like they should.
  8. I have a large Facebook group dedicated to talking about This Is Dan Bell, a Youtuber from Baltimore who films abandoned buildings, dying malls, and used to inspect hotel rooms and document just how nasty lower rated hotels are. He even is a member in the group too and there's thousands of people that joined. Though I'm not active on Facebook anymore, so I should give ownership to someone else honestly. I tried opening up a forum alongside the group but out of the thousands in the group only 20 members joined the forum so I stopped paying for the hosting and shut down the forum. FB groups are just too disorganized, I would often have people post the same thing over and over again.

This is a interesting take on a forum. I usually think of wikis when it comes to storing information. I also would have gone with self hosting rather than using Forumotion myself.
  11. I have dealt with this in the past. I reached out to the moderator who went inactive, and he never replied to my message. So I demoted him. I get it life can be stressful at times and you might need a break. I did give the guy a week to respond and since he never did, I figured he just got bored with the forum.
  12. I bet lots of people aren't going to be happy with this. I don't get why they need to do this when the site already generates tons of money via ads and those who purchase coins or premium membership contribute to the site too. Maybe more people will start using forums again because of this. :P Either that or they'll move to Lemmy, the Fediverse version of Reddit.
  13. This is a great article, I always thought it wouldn't really hurt my SEO if I was to post content on my forum that's been posted elsewhere. I always thought it would help since it would bring traffic from Google whenever someone would search for whatever topic it was.
  14. What I like to do when hiring staff is take a look and see how active the members are who filled out the staff application. If they're quite active, haven't asked to be staff in the past and have no infractions I will most likely hire them. If they aren't that active, begged to be staff or have any warnings I will pass them over for someone else.
  15. I currently have one going right now, but I'll admit I haven't really been keeping up with creating new pages or updating the theme on it. It's a forum wiki dedicated for documenting any and every forum software, whether it's still around or not. It's powered by Mediawiki because I think it's the best wiki software. I'll need to add it here sometime.
  16. None yet, been trying to save up for top surgery. I have been medically transitioning since 2020 however.
  17. I love coming up with sub forums for a community, this is probably my favorite part other than keeping engagement with the community. It's fun coming up with names and figuring out how you want your layout to be. I tend to always put the most important sections like the forum news and rules up top. Same with the introduction area, since it's the first thing your members see when they first log in.

I too feel like I'm coming down with something, I've been feeling this since Monday evening. My throat has been hurting and my nose has been running. I am not running a fever, so I know it's not Covid again but it's probably just your run of the mill Rhinovirus. (A basic cold.) I'll take it over what my wife just got over, which was the norovirus which is a stomach bug. I stayed home from work today to relax a bit.
  19. I used to get coworkers asking me personal questions about my transition. They would ask what surgeries I was going to get if I was getting any. I didn't really mind answering these questions because they were curious and wanted to learn and I knew it wasn't coming from a place of malice but other people could kind of see it as being awkward. I no longer work at that place though, and everyone respects me enough at work not to ask those personal questions.
  20. I didn't always struggle with this, in fact Mighty No. 9 Universe took off because I tweeted about the community and many people joined the forum from there. In fact, that's where my co admin ended up seeing the link at! These days for all my other forums I've struggled to get people to join when I posted links on Facebook and even Bluesky recently. Though part of me wonders if I moved my communities over to NodeBB, if the folks in the Fediverse would appreciate my communities but I don't have the knowledge nor the will to do that. (I just don't care for NodeBB's layout if I'm being honest. So I probably will never move my forums to that software.) I hope other companies will expand and connect with the Fediverse I think it would make social media promoting much easier for those who are struggling.
  21. I think it's easier to try and bring back a dead forum from the grave than starting from scratch. You already have things laid out and set up if you're bringing back one from the dead. Though I've tried this recently, and even though I sent out a mass email no one came back. I'm debating on if I'm going to keep the forum up or not, the subreddit is already dead and it's for a game that was mediocre when it finally came out after being delayed multiple times. I even posted a link on the subreddit, but I made the mistake of posting it before asking the mods so the thread got deleted and no one seen it. Probably got flagged as spam by their bot. (The link used to be on their sidebar though, but since I didn't pay for the domain name in the past it was removed. I purchased the domain name again last year.)
  22. I visit this one, Forum Promotion, my own, Admin Junkies, and Sonic Retro almost every day. (I don't post on Sonic Retro as much as I did, but I do browse. Once I have something interesting to share with the hacking community or something to contribute to the conversations then I'll post there.)
  23. I read about this earlier today on Reddit. It's interesting, I believe the Fediverse already has their own version of Tumblr but this is a good thing because Tumblr is pretty big. Maybe this will get more people interested in the Fediverse and move to different platforms other than the big ones.
  24. Yeah I've shut down too many forums in the past. I didn't have the drive to try and get more members, or keep activity going on the forums. I gave up on them way too fast.
  25. Don't forget to update the template with the usernames you picked.
