  1. As someone who prefers to play retro games and think all games should continue to be released physically I'll definitely have to give your podcast a listen to! I look forward to hearing what you've got to say about games! I love seeing the Super Hang On and Golden Axe footage in your video!
  2. I think it depends on how AI is used. It's fine if someone is using AI to help them write a post, especially if English isn't their first language but as long as they add some edits to make it sound more like it was fully written by a human. However if you're using AI to make fake accounts and they respond to a post almost immediately, it just comes off as being desperate and needing to rely on AI to have a community.
  3. I remember when I first joined Reddit and couldn't really participate in a good number of subreddits because I had little to no karma. There's a reddit alternative called Lemmy that doesn't have these limitations and also don't have the other negative features listed in cpvr's post too. It might be worth checking out!
  4. I did this on Free to be us. I called it the "Early birds" group where anyone who joined shortly after the community was created were placed into the group and they got their own lounge. This is the only forum I did this on though. I think it's a nice way to show that you appreciate your members that were there when the community first started.
  5. If the admin isn't around anymore, I doubt he'd be upset about members joining a new forum. It's one thing if the admin was active and the people coming together were creating a new community out of spite but this isn't the case here.
  6. Nah I like to make websites on topics I'm interested in or think will make an impact. Trends tend to die down eventually, and all that traffic you've gained will slow. Especially if it's centered around one niche topic.
  7. For free forum hosts, Jcink was always my go to. You can move to self hosting since they allow you to download database backups of your forum. As for free blog hosting, Wordpress offers a free hosting plan. You can't use your own domain name, but it's decent for someone starting their own blog for the first time. Now as for free hosting, I used Infinity Free in the past. You need your own domain name, but they give you free SSL certificates, access to cPanel as well as access to phpMyAdmin.

I was thinking the same thing lol. Definitely reminds me of the awesome themes you'd see on Zetaboards!
  9. The Lord of the Rings series is super overrated. I tried watching the first film but got bored watching them walk around for hours. :P I love roleplaying games, and heck I probably would enjoy playing the video games based on the film. But I cannot get into the first film so I never bothered trying to watch the other ones.
  10. I disagree with that, gaming is a great way to escape from the real world. But hey that's just my view on it. (After all I did make this topic lol.) Anyways I'm still playing the Tomb Raider 1 remaster, on new game plus. I'm on the Sanctuary of the Scion so I'm getting close to the end of the game.
  11. Ah so they're adding quests to the mobile app. At first I thought they were adding pop up ads. I've participated in a few quests, it's neat so it's cool that this is coming to mobile. I feel like I'm one of the few people who participated in quests though lol.
  12. Classic forums still have a place on the internet. They're way more organized than any social media platform so anyone can easily find whatever topic they're looking for. Research communities should be on forums and not on chat clients like Discord. Important topics will get lost on Discord, and a server can be taken down at any moment. I think more forum software should look into joining the Fediverse, php forums specifically. NodeBB and Discourse already have joined, but I'd like to see other software join the Fediverse at some point. If we can get more platforms to join the Fediverse and come together with ActivityPub I think we'd see more people joining forums.
  13. In terms of members, I had the largest amount of members on Mighty No. 9 Universe, but Thee Zone is the largest in terms of posts and threads. I had over 100 members on MN9U, and it was quite active too back when the Kickstarter was first announced.
  14. I've completed my part as well. :)
  15. I don't really agree with some of the points. I think it's fine to start off on free forum hosting, just to get a feel for having a forum. That's how I got into forums myself, but then I eventually branched out and tried self hosting. Free forum hosts like Jcink are nice because you can get a database backup of your forum. Forum Spark will eventually have this feature too in the future. Also I know of a very successful forum hosted by Proboards so free forum hosts aren't a complete waste of time.

Tell me about it, super annoying that chips are mainly air and they're expensive! I miss those days. No surprise that most of us here were either born in the late 80's or 90's! We were all young preteens and teenagers when forums were big so lots of us browsed forums back in the 00's and that's where our love for forums came from lol.
  17. I never had anyone mention that they couldn't browse my websites due to a disability. I do know there's a blind individual on Sonic Retro, he uses apps that read the text for him and also respond to threads for him as well so he can still post just fine. Honestly I never really thought about this until I read this thread. Maybe I should look into modifying some of the themes on my forums so there's bigger text.
  18. This reminds me of the auto responses your phone will generate when you're talking to someone via text. Still not surprising that Meta wants to use more AI on their platforms. Meta I suppose thinks we can't come up with responses ourselves, so they decided to shove more AI on their platforms.
  19. As a visiting member, I look for meaningful conversations and seeing what everyone is talking about. As a managing leader, I look for activity. I think as long as I have at least one other person other than me talking on a forum it's good. A forum is only dead if there's no one there to have conversations with.
  20. I'm guessing these spammers searched for "community platform by Xenforo" and just decided to pick a bunch of active Xenforo forums to join. It's odd, I know from time to time members will join and make a introduction topic and leave. I've done this before in the past, because I was in a hurry and joined a random forum then forgot about it. :V
  21. It's really cool to see another platform join the Fediverse! I never used Ghost before, maybe now I'll check it out to see how it compares to Wordpress and Joomla. I don't do much blogging, but it wouldn't hurt to test it out for a bit.
  22. See what your audience likes. Branch out to social media platforms like Reddit, TikTok and so on. Offer unique content to keep your audience coming back for more. For example, if you got a niche based around gaming, tournaments can be a fun way to keep your members engaged.
  23. I'm with Al and Cedric on this. I would move on, and start your own forum. It's clear that the owner doesn't care about the forum anymore sadly, if he can't be bothered to log in at least once a day to help out and he's ignoring your DMs it's time to move on
  24. I put away groceries and threw some trash away. I picked up a bit too, made things look tidy in our living room.
