Does your community have sentimental value?
I don’t hold any sentimental value yet but I do enjoy the niche of what I’m working on. I’m sure as it grows, I’ll get more attached to it. I do hold sentimental value in several communities I’ve frequented in the past.

How much do you pay for your server?
I have shared hosting at $7/month for unlimited. Will do fine for the early stages of my project.

Last non-internet thing you did?
I unclogged my 3D printer and did a test print. It's a bracket that I can use to store pot lids in my cabinets. I used PETG so it's a bit more durable.

Theme Parks
I love a good theme park. Cedar Point and King's Island are the closest big parks although Camden Park (WV death park) is just down the road from my house. I'll ride any coaster but struggle with free hanging things like spinning swings.

Your goal for 2025?
Spend more time outdoors with the kids, learn some coding and another language, continue learning how to be a webmaster, 3D print more and start some 3D modeling, and of course, to play more OldSchool RuneScape.

Should you continue to add content or step back at one point?
I think a base level of participation is always warranted. There should hopefully come a time where membership moves the conversation forward. However, management/owners should always be available and have some level of community involvement. Even if this is logging in and posting occasionally, this shows that the owner is invested in the services. Over time, depending on size, this structure can move to less frequent postings but the shift should occur to where a strong leadership team or staff team continue the engagement with the owner providing more presence to the staff team.

Letting staff go - How and when should you do it?
There are a lot of variables to consider here. 1) Policy - What does your policy state? Is it clear about expectations and procedure for not meeting those expectations? 2) Trends - Can you identify a trend with why people are leaving? What is root cause of their departures? Can something be addressed to correct these issues? 3) History - What is the history of the user’s performance? Is something going on? 4) Alternatives - Performance plans, LOAs, reclassification, etc. can be considered if the user is responsive. In all cases (barring gross misconduct), I think a conversation is warranted. This conversation should include documentation that notes areas of concerns, specific call to actions, and a clear check in. If expectations continue to not be met, I would consider either next steps. Coming from HR, I always err on the side of employee development and care. It’s easier to navigate a situation if the decision to leave belongs to the person rather than to management. This conversation can be tricky but detailing procedure (which could include separation) sometimes motivates users to go ahead and depart rather than working through a corrective action scenario.

What makes someone a bad community owner?
I think you hit the nail on the head with qualities of a less than stellar community manager. I think the most impactful scenario is lack of admin presence. Leadership comes from the top and leaders must align forum goals to their practices. If leadership isn’t present, those beneath will not be aligned and will phase themselves out 9/10 times.

Very nostalgic, love the visuals and the thematic elements!

This ain't an airport, no need to announce your departure
I think it’s a case by case basis. I value exit feedback but will also not respond if it’s an obvious attempt to continue drama.

Administrata Essentials: January 2025
I love the analytics showing percentage increase and decreases! That’s a neat level of transparency. Great work, excited for next month’s!

Is it best to have a website along side your forum?
Everybody posted incredibly solid advice. I’d consider what type of website content you could add that isn’t abundantly available elsewhere. For a fan forum niche for a sports team, I think a lot of the value would be in creating alluring discussion around game predictions, player and team performance analyses, creating a space to debate why your team performed as is, etc. If you’re particularly good at analyzing hockey games, perhaps you could do an odds or betting predictions set up before games where you post vital statistics that can be used to help form opinions on how one thinks a game may go?

New Here
Thank you! New job has kept me busy in the last two weeks but I’m looking into moving towards Xenforo before releasing. I’ve got some initial content posted so I’m hoping to start recruiting for one moderator this weekend. I’d like to release by mid-February at the latest. Thank you for staying up to date with it!

House of the Dragon
If you like Game of Thrones, it’s a neat add-on. I’m excited for season 3.

New Here
Hello all, I’ve been admiring Administrata’s design for quite some time and figured I should join and check out the community aspect too. I love the Star Trek vibe and also the genre. Anyways, I’m Matthew. I’ve been foruming since 2007. I love meeting others and discussing management strategies. I’m a family man with a loving wife (been together since high school) and two awesome kids. I have 5 animals, 2 dogs and 3 cats. I love RuneScape, motorcycling, and learning more about Human Resources management. I’m excited to meet everyone and see familiar faces from other projects.
