Do your connections from admin forums help you when starting a new forum?
Same here. When I first started one of forums in 2005, I wasn’t aware of any admin or promotion forums at the time. Instead, I relied on my connections from the online games I played to build up my forum. Eventually, I discovered admin and promotion forums a few months later. I’m still active in these games and use them as a promotional tool. The connections and relationships I formed while playing games helped me get started, but admin and promotion forums played a much larger role in my journey as a community owner.

Day 1 of launching your forum
On the first day of launching my forum, I focus on setting up the categories, writing forum descriptions, and seeding the forum with content. I like to start with a few forums and a minimal number of categories. Once I have a decent amount of content on the forums, I begin reaching out to other forum owners and engage in post exchanges. I also create social media pages to promote the forum and spread the word. I prefer starting my forum with at least 20–30 topics to ensure it doesn’t feel empty when I start inviting other users to join. During the first couple of days, I’m heavily focused on content creation. This helps set the tone for the community and ensures there’s enough content for users to engage with from the start.

What age did you start using forums?
I’ve been using forums since the age of 14-15. It’s been over 20 years now since I joined a forum for the first time.

Why are you not active on your forum?
I’m always active on my forum, as I believe it’s important for an owner to remain an active part of their community regardless of its size. That said, I understand why some forum owners become less active once their forums grow significantly. At that point, they may feel their presence is less needed or rely on a team to handle day-to-day operations and keep things running smoothly. However, I’m not a fan of stepping back entirely. I think an owner’s active involvement sets the tone for the community and reinforces a sense of connection and leadership. Whether a forum is small or large, I believe the owner’s presence adds value and helps foster engagement and loyalty among members.

Reddit is now falling in Google search
Reddit is starting to lose some of its rankings on Google after dominating Google for quite sometime. It seems like Reddit, the site that ranks well for every single query in Google Search, is starting to see a small but visible ranking drop in Google Search. It seems Reddit is losing Google Search visibility when you look at its ranking reports in Semrush and Sistrix. I spotted this in the comments here where one person said, "Reddit got hit!" They then shared this Semrush chart showing the dip in the past day or two (around January 7th) in Google search visibility: Here is a Sistrix chart Glenn Gabe shared with me: It is super early but it seems Reddit has seen some sort of ranking drop with Google Search in the past couple of days. I am not sure if this will upset it's $60 million deal with Google - maybe this is just temporary? Meanwhile Stackexchange and Quora seem to be doing well on Google Search (but no real change around the 7th). Here is Quora: Here is Stackexchange: Update: Glenn Gabe also shared his thoughts on X and wrote: Source: https://www.seroundtable.com/reddit-not-ranking-google-38710.html According to Barry, Reddit is still seeing a dip today. Will Reddit start seeing more of its traffic decline from Google or is this just a blimp? Only time will tell, but this could be good news for other forums.🤔

How many threads do you need to make on a daily basis?
It really depends on the purpose of your forum and the areas you’re posting in. A well-written article or two can be far more impactful than a casual chat thread, but creating quality content like that requires more time and effort. Focusing on output volume can be helpful if you’re working toward a specific goal and want to generate a lot of content. However, it’s not essential to set a strict output target. It’s always best to focus on sharing your genuine ideas and thoughts, rather than fixating on numbers or stats. That kind of pressure often leads to burnout and less desirable results.

Shared, VPS or Dedicated?
A VPS is only more secure if you take the necessary steps to protect it. This includes using two-step verification for your cPanel accounts, changing default SSH ports, and using SSH keys for authentication.

Really active member(s) during slow period
I actually don’t get annoyed if a member decides to go on a posting spree—I’d welcome it with open arms. 🤗 It’s very encouraging and motivating to see members going on posting sprees, as it’s always great to see them do so.😁

Which niche do you feel is overdone in the forum world?
I think it might be on par with sports and music forums. Both are highly competitive niches, which makes them a lot more fun. 🧟♂️ The gaming industry is a broad niche because it involves so many different games and consoles. This means there are plenty of areas to explore and cover within the niche. The biggest gaming forums I think are: https://forums.pcgamer.com/ https://www.resetera.com/forums/gaming-forum.7/ https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/online_gaming https://www.avforums.com/categories/video-gaming.517/ https://www.neoseeker.com/forums/pc/ - it’s still using vBulletin 3.

What is the minimum investment need to start a forum?
I think it all depends on the type of forum you want to build. If you choose the paid forum software route, you’ll need at least $195–$300 to get your forum off the ground. This amount includes licensing and hosting costs. You’ll also need to take into account the type of add-ons you’d like to use, especially if you opt for Xenforo. You should budget an additional $20–$100 for these. On the other hand, if you choose free forum hosting software, you can save money. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend ProBoards, but I’d choose Jcink instead.

Sudden boost of activity
A sudden surge of activity on your forum can happen at any time, and it’s a great opportunity to keep the momentum going by actively responding to current topics and posts. As long as users enjoy the community and it remains engaged and continues to grow, these bursts of activity will likely become more frequent.
