Do you use XFES/Elasticsearch?
Funny that you mention that. I tried my hardest to get it running in Docker, and wanted the latest version (8.x). And, like you said, it just would never start. However, it was hard to configure because it came with security settings and wanted to run over HTTPS on a local connection, which didn't make much sense (as I blocked incoming 9200/9300 ports anyway, so it's communicating locally). So, I did more research before giving up and found that Elasticsearch 7 doesn't require the certificates to be registered. Though, for security, I did update the username "elastic"'s password to something more hardened, just in case. I am running Elasticsearch 7.10.2 in Docker and it's taking half the RAM. The server instance isn't that busy, so I didn't want to upgrade to 4 GB RAM until necessary. It has 0 effect on responsiveness with the forums running. It's constantly at 60-70% usage, but no problems so far. A 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 55 GB, 2 TB bandwidth with Plesk Admin ($12.95 after 1st month) and auto-backups ($2/mo) comes to a total of $24.95/mo beginning the 2nd month (1st month is $12). You can save $12.95 by choosing a free control panel like CyberPanel FastPanel, or Webmin and $2 if you remember to manually backup or set up automated backup FTP transfers to your computer. So, you could hypothetically pay as little as $10 for an instance that would run Elasticsearch just fine with multiple forums on it. I, on the other hand, would choose to use AMD High Performance, which is 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe (faster file read speeds), and 3 TB bandwidth for a base price of $12 (add $2 backups and $12.95 if you choose Plesk). Compare that to GoDaddy 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe with cPanel or Plesk for $36.98/mo (although you get 1 additional IP which is like $2 or $4 at Vultr) and 7 snapshots for daily backups for a week (which would be like $5 at Vultr). I would consider my proposition low-tier and cost-saving compared to one of the largest hosts. You might get something similar to GoDaddy (with a reseller or lesser-known/lower-trust service) for $20-25, but you'd still be essentially paying double. If you want to try out Vultr for a month, I believe it's free if you install the lowest tier (which is only 1 GB RAM, so you couldn't test out Elasticsearch), but it could get you a feel for Plesk or the other panels if you're a cPanel user for free, feel free to use my promo code https://www.vultr.com/?ref=9643485-9J If you feel Vultr is right for you after a month and make a $100 deposit, you'll get a $300 credit to your account (I'll get $100*). With $400 deposited, and the bare bones of what I suggested, you could run "free" for 60 days (as the $300 credit expires if you don't use it, but you could put it to use by trying out a lot of different instance configurations for what is right for you with it) and then your $100 deposited would be about a year of hosting paid. *If you just pay $10 to test it out, I'll get $10. * $10 for $10 promo link: https://www.vultr.com/?ref=7990634 Vultr also has a nice built in firewall that would've prevented the recent Cyberpanel attacks if configured, and, free DNS management that is awesome and updates quickly once changes are made (like within seconds if you need to enter a TXT record for Amazon or Google verification). In addition to that, they have Object Storage that is S3 compatible, so you can use that with Xenforo's native support with 1 TB starting at $5. That said, try the Elasticsearch 7.10.2 image on your current VPS. It should boot right up without issue and you shouldn't notice any performance issues whatsoever if you have less than 4GB (2GB is required as I did test it to try and limit it to 1GB and 1.5GB). Just to add, if you didn't know, Xenforo Cloud uses Vultr. So, it's not a service I'd turn my head to vs. Linode or Amazon S3.

Do you use XFES/Elasticsearch?
I got it to run on 2GB RAM, which is low-tier VPS territory.

Do you use XFES/Elasticsearch?
Are you using XFES/Elasticsearch and why or why not? With all the faults I found in it so far, I can't believe that I lived without it for so long. It helps tremendously in not getting duplicate threads when necessary (a new thread on the same topic just a week later, not the same topic discussed 1-2 years later, as the latter would be preferable with the time between topics where things may need to be discussed again).

Logo design with a social logo/(fav)icon for ROFLMAO
Sounds good

Logo design with a social logo/(fav)icon for ROFLMAO
Looking to order a simple logo with the text "ROFLMAO". It should incorporate the 🤣 emoji in it as either the first or 2nd O, but not use anyone's iteration or design of the ROFL for copyright purposes (a rendition of your own version of the ROFL emoji). Or, the emoji before ROFLMAO (🤣 ROFLMAO) if that can't fit into the text. Preferably, as the emoji is used in place of an O, and is essentially a circle, the lettering should all be block letters or the same height/width. Example of block letters (same width/height or close enough). COURIER NEW ROFLMAO It should be no more than 5 colors. It should fit over these two colors (for style variations on a forum), so the tears in the emoji and the outline of the face should blend well with both. And finally, it should be crisp on the edges at a height of 50px (with whatever width that makes it). The emoji would be the "icon" (social icon) -- so it should fit from 32x32, 192x192, 512x512... Preferrably delivered in two different vector files (icon & text with icon). Looking for a quote, thanks!

MEGA pack order for Month of November 1-30
I've seen some come in and make reviews on movies, but no movies posted. Perhaps, because this doesn't make logical sense and there'd be no reason to post a new movie if it would only count as a post. I'll update this so it can count as a thread OR a post, but not two (as the thread is reassigned). So if you need to increase your thread count, create a movie, TV series, or album by just dropping in the DB links with a message (that becomes an automatic reply, or post) and no title (as it's pulled from the DB link). And, if you need to increase your post count, drop in a movie listed and reply to it, or count your newly created movie as a post instead of a thread. The same is true for music albums, but it uses a different database/website. If there isn't an album listed (as it's a pretty sparse collection), then skip it and do new movies and TV series. I'm sure there are 100s of movies that you've watched and can get the gist of to create a meaningful review for by just watching the trailer to jog your memory a bit. However, it should be a bit engaging though... like ending off with a question so that it can be replied to. Adding a rating would be nice too, if that doesn't take too much extra time to click this to give it a star rating:

Sidebars - Yes or No?
Yeah, I was merely introducing the concept of drag and drop in 2.4 so that it's a habitual thing that can be carried over to 3.0 for user preferences, little steps at a time to get people accustom to the action. Drag and drop wouldn't completely abolish Display order ID. It could easily be drag/drop for some that would just convert the underlying Display order on the spot for insertion between or at the top/bottom. There should still be a Display order number for accessibility reasons, just accessible by clicking on the node to edit it as usual. But, it makes rearranging much easier to drag and drop for those that can to rearrange a category, or to move children out of child nodes to be parents or even drag a node from one category to another. For those with accessibility issues, they could still go into the node to select the parent and numeric Display order. If forums would collaborate and give up these numbers, it could give us a better idea of how to move forward: Toggles or no toggles.

Sidebars - Yes or No?
With DigitalPoint's Better Google Analytics add on, you can see that there is drag and drop functionality in the ACP to some degree. As 2.4 is focusing on, or so they say, admin improvements, I'm at least hopeful that they get rid of numerical display order in favor of drag and drop for nodes, etc. I find the numbering input for display order so archaic now, and can easily be messed up by a key not hitting (say you want display order 100 but enter 10). While not complex at all to fix, it would take (frustrating to some) seconds to try and find the node again to edit it to the correct display order, when you could just drag and drop it and have a better visual layout. https://xenforo.com/community/threads/digitalpoint-better-google-analytics.206200/page-33#post-1705062 That is the reasoning behind my logic of XF 3 allowing, or being able to, have drag and drop. Maybe not as a core function on the 1st party style, but allow for 3rd party styles to drag and drop widget placement order, and it update for them only. I think this would be enough for desktop users to get the hint... but there's always a forum announcement that can be made as mobile users wouldn't see this and catch on, so they'd need to be instructed to long press a category/node to drag and drop it. Sidebars - Yes or No?
I'm really hoping XF 3 either has a more up to date "social" format or blocks that let, firstly, the admin to decide placement, but can be extended to letting users design their own custom layouts. In other words, let admins set the display order for first time viewers, but a style (either core or extendable by 3rd party) let users collapse, hide, and even drag and drop categories they think are more important higher, as it'll let them ignore the noise easier, thus theoretically, increase engagement, as they see what they want to post to or interact with first and foremost. Edit: I forgot I have custom development to hide (ignore/block, rather, without blocking the author of the thread if they only wish to block it, along with categories and nodes [if permission is set to allow blocking of those categories and nodes in the node settings]) that I had developed for 2.2. It's a pipedream to think XF will implement this in v3, so I might give this a test run on 2.3 as it might let users focus more time on what they want to see, allowing for more engagement since they can quickly view what they want and save time to post or reply there.

Sidebars - Yes or No?
I'm working with a new style that has this option. It would be nice if there were an option where if they collapse them, what typically would go there would shift into above/below forum — and maybe even between category — widgets instead. Then you can still display that information to those that don't like sidebars, but would still find having say, a carousel of trending topics useful to have at the top, between categories, or at the bottom useful. That'd be the best of both worlds.

MEGA pack order for Month of November 1-30
Also, feel free to copy other forum games you see on other forums to: https://www.realshit.com/forums/playground-of-puzzles.18/ Just be more cyclic in posting. Not: USER A USER B USER A USER B USER A USER C More natural turn taking like: USER A USER B USER C USER A USER C USER B USER A... Easy post count if you can add to the ones there and to new ones. But, as it's 1200 posts, that can be done quickly there. So try to limit yourself to 20-30% there. That's really all, Thanks all!

MEGA pack order for Month of November 1-30
Keep in mind this is merely a test of quality and quantity — I'm not going to complain if this isn't achieved by November 30 because I know the content team here is relatively new, getting organized as it goes along, and might be understaffed for an order of this magnitude at the time. Thanks for joining in. If the quality is good, I intend on keeping a mega pack order per month. And if more can join in, possibly 2. Keep in mind there are 4 forums that you can easily add a review that will count as a post even though it may show up as a thread after you first create it as the thread is merely aggregated content while the message becomes a reply (or post). The threads are reassigned to Movie Info, TV Info, and Music Info, so do not count those towards threads, rather 1 post. Drop in, add a TV show, movie, or album with a message (and rate it if you'd take an additional second) in the thread. Try and add as much to the review if possible and not like "this was a good movie"; add a scene you liked or emotions felt. The forums where the thread will be reassigned, but your post count, are: https://www.realshit.com/forums/movie-night.13/ https://www.realshit.com/forums/bingeworthy-tv.5/ https://www.realshit.com/forums/discography-discussion.11/ Game reviews work differently than those 3 add ons, so a thread will count towards a thread. https://www.realshit.com/forums/game-debuts.6/ Thanks all!

MEGA pack order for Month of November 1-30
Ordering 300 threads/1200 posts to be spread across the entire month of November. No rush to get them out. Work at own pace. If you can't accomplish it in a month since it's such a large order, no worry. Just a test on how much you can do in how much time to see if I can order more or less next month.

What DOES NOT belong on a pizza?
I thought the same for the longest time, then I tried it. Japanese mayonnaise is different, so it adds a unique taste. It ain't that Miracle Whip. It's lines of mayonnaise up and down the pizza on top. This type of pizza is usually served in izakayas (timed all-you-can-drink beer restaurants) and not really a chain-style pizza. As for potatoes on pizza outside of izakayas, you'll find potato wedges with cheese and meats. It's a good taste with the beer.

What DOES NOT belong on a pizza?
One anchovy per slice is a good number to have, if any, and if you are craving salt. When I worked in a restaurant, I'd load mine up with anchovies before they went bad. Something that you might not even consider is mashed potatoes topped with cheese, corn, and mayonnaise. Delicious Japanese style.

XenForo 2.4 coming soon?
Checks our DMs after I send a message... 👀 I'm eyeing a DoH style and that is borderline unacceptable for UX.

XenForo 2.4 coming soon?
I'm waiting to upgrade as there's a style that I want in 2.3.3a, so I'm unsure if it'll even work on what I have.

Why Choose a Forum Over Discord for Your Community?
I know from watching YouTube commentary videos on controversial people that there are ways to scrape entire servers just to pull it out as (unofficial) evidence after the server is taken down. Unofficial in parenthesis because I'm sure if it were a legal matter, you'd probably have to subpoena Discord for the official transcripts. What you're allowed to do with scraped data is beyond my knowledge though. It could be ownership of Discord in full. I'm not going to bother to sift through 100 pages of ToS to confirm that, but that's more likely than not the case.

A new-ish forum script
I like the simplicity of it. The basic functions a community needs to communicate. Then, allow for a layer of customization with the hooks and whatnot.

Why Choose a Forum Over Discord for Your Community?
A good analogy of Discord would be Proboards vs. IRC (the old chat system). You don't really own it (maybe you do and they let you export it, I'm not entirely sure with free forum hosting services) and it has trendy features that the latter you wouldn't have even conceived of at the time.

Gorilla Marketing
I'd honestly get a sign made that's identical to the park or trail signs and put something like "Bike Safely" or something generic on with :-P It took 8 years for California to fix this guerilla "vandalism". And perhaps even trail-marking signs for this as well (mile 1, or the GPS coordinates).

The Disappearance of an Internet Domain
It'll be interesting to see how IANA handles this, whether they follow the precedence set, or fold it into a new "gTLD" (generic TLD). Because this just so happens to also be the case with .ai as well. The .ai ccTLD is assigned to Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. If they ever give the land back, it could go to either the US (as we have the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in the region) which would make it .us or to the Dominican Republic which would make it .do. I didn't trace the ownership of the islands back that far, as to see if it was an independent nation by that name, but it is a part of the Leeward Islands, which either could have a stake in.

A new-ish forum script
I miss IRC... or what it used to be. But yeah, I would keep it as light as possible. Include the hooks so people can expand on it, but if your aim is simplicity, it should be exactly like this and let users create what they want on top of it. The only thing I'd have to offer is that you might want to add the total member count as an option to be viewable or not. Some forums display that and some don't. Also, since you added member profiles, the newest member should link to their profile. That's about all I'd add to it.

The Things that can Automatically Kill a Forum: How to prevent them from happening
At least with a chatbox, you can have a "bot" post the last 20 messages in a thread and keep it going as long as chat keeps going. This will give you some visibility on search engines for what is being discussed in the chatbox, to then discuss it outside of the chatbox in the forum. Expand further on that, have the bot pick up on keywords/tags and link to forum content (either a search of that phrase or a link to the tag used). This will give an easier gateway to discussions on the topic being discussed in chat.

A new-ish forum script
Looks like a great lightweight forum that can have many uses for communities that don't need the razzle-dazzle and just the conversation.
