We use Gravatar, a widely used service that automatically applies a user's Gravatar account avatar. For those without an uploaded avatar, we provide a default image featuring our logo. I think this is an improvement over the default letter-based avatar. That said, I believe forcing anything on users can backfire. Personally, I prefer not to require anyone to use an avatar.

Same. I don't mind a few advertisements here and there, but the way Adsense has their automatic advertisements setup is just awful and I'd instantly leave the website. So that's one thing I wouldn't do for my own websites. I'm a fan of subscriptions, it gives the member the option to subscribe (or not) and leave at any point they want, leaving them in full control. But it also needs to have some value. Gone are the days where you'd give them a larger inbox size, or anything like that.

Yeah, that’s still a bad decision they made. But I guess that’s a normal business decision. It’s not just IC that does that, many companies already do this and more are converting to that model too.

And for which platforms? Got any licenses just gathering dust - maybe even ones you won’t part with, no matter what? Let’s hear it! :D I've got only 2 XenForo licenses, both in use. Used to own 7 licenses, but figured I didn't need them at all. So I sold most of them. Also have an Invision Community v5 license, in use.
