When it comes to new members, how do you strike the balance between welcoming them and ensuring they earn their spot in your community? Do you have specific restrictions in place to encourage meaningful engagement or protect the forum from spammers and low-effort participation? For example, maybe you: Restrict private messaging until a member reaches a minimum post count. Limit access to signature lines until they’ve been active for 90 days. Keep certain (sub)forums read-only until members prove themselves with valuable contributions. What’s your approach? Do you think these kinds of restrictions help encourage quality participation, or do they risk alienating new users?

Promotion is often seen as the owner’s responsibility as it’s your vision, your project, your mission to grow the community. But what about your staff? Do they ever chip in to help get the word out? Personally, I think it’s great when staff members take the initiative to promote the site, whether it’s by sharing links, or even sharing stuff on social media, or inviting friends to join. That said, I also believe that if they’re actively and consistently contributing to promotion, there should be some form of compensation involved - whether that’s financial, perks on the site, or other rewards. Of course, there’s always the exception for those who do it purely out of passion or a desire to give back to the community. How do you handle this on your forum? Do you expect staff to help promote as part of their role, or is it entirely optional? If they do help, do you compensate them, or do you leave it as a goodwill gesture? Let’s hear your thoughts!

Let’s talk about those users who stick with the default avatar. Do you wish they’d take the time to upload something personal? Or does it not bother you at all? Personally, I’ve always felt a stronger connection to members who upload avatars - it adds a unique touch and makes their posts more recognizable. It’s easier to remember them and even start associating their thoughts and personality with their chosen image. I feel like default avatars can feel a bit anonymous, like the user hasn’t fully invested in the community yet. Even when you set that default image different from the software's default. How do you see it? Does it affect how you view or engage with members? Do you encourage them to upload avatars, or is it just one of those things that comes with running a forum?

It was on Agora, I merged the two forums a while back to keep focus on one instead of two and neglecting one or the other.
