How easy do you find it to connect with your target audience on social media? Is it a smooth process, or does it feel like a constant uphill battle?

In my experience, success largely depends on your niche and what you bring to the table. If your content aligns with trending topics and provides consistent value, reaching a wider audience becomes much easier, especially when paired with the right strategies. But for more niche or slow-moving topics, the challenge can be real.

What’s been your experience? Do you have any go-to methods that work for you?

I don't currently run a website, but I used to do quite well being able to promote my forum via Facebook. I managed to get probably a hundred or more members through free advertising via Facebook pages and groups about 10-12 years ago.

Nowadays, I think I'd struggle with social media promotion, because it seems so over-saturated with businesses and websites trying to promote themselves. I think I'd struggle also with just identifying which social media networks to focus on promoting on nowadays, because I don't think there's one "clear cut" favourite, like Facebook was back in the day.

I find it pretty easy, personally.

I am a certified social media strategist. I took a certification in it, but I've also done a ton of experiments and trials with social media marketing.

I know social. I understand the algorithms. I have large pages, even bigger social groups, and I make money with it.

It's all about "audience listening" by thoroughly researching your avatar or your ideal customer profile/persona. Then you find what social media platform they use the most and scale your activity on it. You'll need to post, engage, and visit a TON at first at least until you establish yourself and then you can slow down.

But the trick is conversion. Not a lot of people on social are into forums, especially younger generations.

I didn't always struggle with this, in fact Mighty No. 9 Universe took off because I tweeted about the community and many people joined the forum from there. In fact, that's where my co admin ended up seeing the link at! These days for all my other forums I've struggled to get people to join when I posted links on Facebook and even Bluesky recently. Though part of me wonders if I moved my communities over to NodeBB, if the folks in the Fediverse would appreciate my communities but I don't have the knowledge nor the will to do that. (I just don't care for NodeBB's layout if I'm being honest. So I probably will never move my forums to that software.) I hope other companies will expand and connect with the Fediverse I think it would make social media promoting much easier for those who are struggling.
