I'm looking for a theme designer. I don't care which platform they design for currently, since I'm really looking for a design that doesn't fit an existing platform, and whatever platform they habitually design for should be fine - porting it from another platform is no concern to me, but we are talking about a forum.

Overall I'm looking for a modern light/dark theme, ideally with not everything being flat - I'd like something ideally that lands in the category of 'timeless classic' if that makes sense. Colours, I'm not wedded to a palette, but I could see modest blues working, I could even see earthy browns with a lush green accent working. Something with neutral-to-positive vibes but without being too prescriptive on design elements.

I'm being vague because I don't have solid answers for some of the obvious questions yet, which is why I'm trying to find out who people generally recommend as an opening position.

Contact @SarahKik for a theme print design if you’re looking for something more classic to the old VB days, glossy, modern, nothing flat at all.

I'm going to second Pixel Exit. I use them every time. There are a lot of great settings to fine-tune it and make it perfect, too.

https://pixelexit.com gets a huge thumbs up from me.
Definitely recommended if you want flat UI as almost all his current styles are just that.
But if you want flat UI 2.0 (like with a little shadowing or borders), I'd suggest DoH.

I'm currently working on an edit of one of their themes to roll out on a board.

I also had Russ of PixelExit do a custom theme, which was a basic edit of the default style. I also got him to convert his free Invision theme for 2.3 support (dark mode). He's easy to work with if you want customization.

To add uniqueness to your forum, you might like the XF addons from BassMan (on XF), or contact him after you have something in mind to tweak a bit more as he's great all-around with CSS.

He’s not looking for XF add ons, nor anything specific XF, but just a designer who can design a template so to speak.

I know. I'm just recommending 3 that are capable of and offer the services requested, based on my anecdotal experience working with them on XF-specific styling.

BassMan is the only one I asked for CSS services (styling) that wasn't specifically for XF.

Ah apologies. Didn't realize BassMan offered these services. 😇
