How many sites is too many to run solo?

Hello, I'm Al.
Administrator
Lots of subjects about 'how many staff is too many' but let's ask a different question: How many sites is too many?

At my peak I was running four forums and about a dozen (!) blogs. It was too much. I couldn't keep up. So I merged some stuff and felt better... and then started a new forum because I enjoy the honeymoon period!

So what’s your tipping point? At what point do you start burning out, losing quality, or just leaving projects to rot? I want to hear how many sites you’re actively managing and what your upper limit looks like before things start falling apart.

Man having to maintain a dozen blogs on top of four forums must have been a lot! It's hard keeping up with a Blog more than a Forum IMO. I have one that I haven't kept up with, can't imagine trying to keep up with 12! Anyways this number is going to vary depending on who's answering. Right now I'm doing fine managing RPG Haven, Thee Zone, and Gex Forums. Like I mentioned above, I haven't kept up with my blog so I'm thinking about either archiving it or actually working on it again I haven't decided yet. There's another forum I have that I'm working on converting to Discourse, I was going to have it be converted to vBulletin but the devs took forever to respond to my ticket so I decided to cancel my vB cloud subscription and just move to Discourse where I can take advantage of ActivityPub. And with the state of the United States currently, I need to get this forum back up and running again as soon as possible because it's been offline for too long. Anyways sorry for the long post lol.

I used to host a few forums, but I have toned it down to just one. And that's good for me.

I think more than one is too much xD

If its a self sustaining website, then you can add another one.

Maybe, I should modify my statement to say that 'More than one can be okay only if you handle others that are self sustaining'.

:love:Here is an easter egg:love:

I think it depends on the person, how skilled they are and whether or not they have access to the internet all day. Some people can work on all aspects of the forum such as coding, creating badge images, creating content etc. which is great when working solo. However, myself, I know I'm not really techy nor do I know how to code so I wouldn't be able to do a forum all on my own.

As for how many sites is too many to run again it defers from person to person. If you have a career where you are away from the time you're on shift to when you're done then it may be difficult to run a site solo as for the hours your away no one is able to work on your forum or make sure no one is spamming or sharing inappropriate content. However, if you work from home and you're able to be on your laptop/computer all day and you're able to work on the forum on the side then I feel it would be easier to run the forum solo.

For the most part I don't think people should run forums solo (without any other staff) because it is A LOT of work to keep the forum active, post on the sites social medias, upgrade/update the themes etc.

I think that's a question that only the individual can answer. I run one forum, and while it's totally dead (right now), it's still a lot of work. I also have a SubStack that I've been neglecting as I've been trying to reach out to other communities to find desperately needed friendship. Lately, I've retreated back into forums because I'm so sick of all the political garbage that is, like, everywhere on Social Media. For me, I think one website is about perfect. But then again, I not only have a forum on that site, I've got an article system (that I'm probably going to use for creative writing and fan fictions) and I've started a wiki project, filled with information that creative writers would want to have access to when using anime and characters in fan fictions. It's a lot of work just setting everything up, and then I think about all the data entry I'm gonna have to do! overwhelmed!
