Gorilla marketing is when you use surprise or unconventional means of advertising or marketing something.

A flash mob, for example, is a form of gorilla marketing.

How do you all feel about using such a technique for marketing online communities?

If any of you have used this marketing strategy, tell us about it!

I've never really thought about doing guerilla marketing for a forum before, or indeed for sites in general. When I've seen some things done, it usually seems to get a 'huh' reaction and people then move on rather than it being a meaningful conversion.

Have you got any examples of how guerrilla marketing would work for a community?
I've considered writing "BikeSouthernIllinois.com" across the gravel of a local Southern Illinois bike trail I ride.

That would definitely be a form of guerrilla marketing.

I think it would really be niche specific on how you can accomplish it or not.

For my hiking forum, maybe I could create "flash sponsored groups hikes" in different areas and print a bunch of business cards with a QR code that goes to the forum.

Just to name a few things.

I'd honestly get a sign made that's identical to the park or trail signs and put something like "Bike Safely" or something generic on with
a QR code
:-P

It took 8 years for California to fix this guerilla "vandalism".

And perhaps even trail-marking signs for this as well (mile 1, or the GPS coordinates).
For my hiking forum
