What do you look for in regards to how your forum is going before thinking about adding people on as staff? Is it a certain number of members or content? Do you tend to run things yourself and have you gotten to the point in which you were becoming overwhelmed with running your forum.

I usually wait a bit before promoting members to staff. I wait and see who's the most active and if they have asked to be staff in the past. If they asked, I wouldn't promote them since I have it stated in my rules that if you ask to be staff you will not be promoted. It just seems rude to me. I also see if the member has any infractions and if they do, I wouldn't promote them either.

As your forum grows and you start having a lot of members and activities you need staff, however, the problem with having staff is you they are hard to find. Therefore, you might end up having someone who is a staff on multiple forums, or someone who is not good enough to help you.

I'll typically add another moderator fairly quickly to help me keep the forum active.

Then I'll wait until the two of us are overwhelmed and need help. Then we can add another moderator. And repeat. So, 1 extra at the get-go and then as needed.

I only have one admin on my forums, being me. The rest are moderators.
