The misses and I are doing a weekend away from the kids. How about you? Happy Friday all!

What game are you currently playing?

Playing the good and trusty Old School RuneScape. Also playing a mobile game, Survivor.io

General What's your take on members without an avatar?

Personal preference - people “decorate” their accounts. My office in real life is decked out with nerdy and sentimental items (LEGO, degrees, Flo from Progressive bobble head, various stuffed animals, relics from old jobs, etc.). I feel my profile is my forum “office” where I get to showcase...

SEO OpenAI to integrate SearchGPT into ChatGPT before 2024 ends

I like the idea of ChatGPT empowered search as an augment. However, I wouldn’t want to replace Google Search with ChatGPT entirely. I somehow made ChatGPT my default search browser here at work for a few days through an add-on. I found that this made my search take longer in some cases...

Would you rather buy or build a community?

I think either path can result in success if done correctly. New forums require dedication, time, investment, and a lot of work to hopefully get off the ground and meet your personal goals. It may be a long time, if ever, before a financial recoupment is observed. However, as you said, you...

Design Design Choice and Customer Engagement

I grew up playing Nintendo 64 and Gameboy games. The graphics always left a lot to imagination but I had fun nonetheless. In fact, I didn’t consider the graphics until I became an adult. I’ve observed that my tolerance for graphics has continued to remain lower than some. For instance, I see...

    Please Heart

I love simple stuff like this. It reminds me of those websites that grow pets when you click on their egg (a link) lol.

    Adopted Security Measures

Part of being an administrator is ensuring that your members and your site remain safe. This can be a daunting task if you aren’t proactive with your efforts. What measures do you take to secure your forum? What methods are automated and what do you do manually to help with site security?

Case Study Does your community have sentimental value?

I don’t hold any sentimental value yet but I do enjoy the niche of what I’m working on. I’m sure as it grows, I’ll get more attached to it. I do hold sentimental value in several communities I’ve frequented in the past.

How much do you pay for your server?

I have shared hosting at $7/month for unlimited. Will do fine for the early stages of my project.

    Last non-internet thing you did?

I unclogged my 3D printer and did a test print. It's a bracket that I can use to store pot lids in my cabinets. I used PETG so it's a bit more durable.

    Theme Parks

I love a good theme park. Cedar Point and King's Island are the closest big parks although Camden Park (WV death park) is just down the road from my house. I'll ride any coaster but struggle with free hanging things like spinning swings.

    Your goal for 2025?

Spend more time outdoors with the kids, learn some coding and another language, continue learning how to be a webmaster, 3D print more and start some 3D modeling, and of course, to play more OldSchool RuneScape.

Growth Should you continue to add content or step back at one point?

I think a base level of participation is always warranted. There should hopefully come a time where membership moves the conversation forward. However, management/owners should always be available and have some level of community involvement. Even if this is logging in and posting...

Delegation Letting staff go - How and when should you do it?

There are a lot of variables to consider here. 1) Policy - What does your policy state? Is it clear about expectations and procedure for not meeting those expectations? 2) Trends - Can you identify a trend with why people are leaving? What is root cause of their departures? Can something...

Leadership What makes someone a bad community owner?

I think you hit the nail on the head with qualities of a less than stellar community manager. I think the most impactful scenario is lack of admin presence. Leadership comes from the top and leaders must align forum goals to their practices. If leadership isn’t present, those beneath will not...
