I would rather own a business that maintains itself with sustainable growth. It's been a goal of mine for awhile, but I've been working hard towards that goal for the last year.
I originally started with MyBB and switched to Xenforo. I need a mobile friendly forum which is ultimately the reason I switched softwares, and more features which I like on Xenforo.
If they're not trying to recruit members, and only post links if it relates to a post. I don't mind my competition participating on my forum. If their sole purpose is to advertise they will be banned.
Our daily games, leaderboards, monthly freeroll. There is honestly a lot of unique things in my community. I enjoy expanding my forum with unique ideas.

I've used Stack Overflow when I needed to learn how to do something with my website. It's a good site for a lot of questions/answers related to programming.
I always comment/engage if I have anything of value to add to the posts. I try to have a good balance/ratio with how much I post, and posts by my members.
